Scope of Job
Responsible to learn and acquire fundamental skills in information security principles, practices, and technologies to assist with monitoring and defending the digital infrastructure of participating regional organizations against cyber threats under the Regional Security Operations Center (RSOC).
Description of Duties
  • Works as an RSOC analyst trainee to obtain entry level fundamental skills, hands on training and knowledge in information security.
  • Learns and acquires the fundamental skills to monitor and defend the digital infrastructure of participating regional organizations against cyber threats.
  • Gains a strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, and analytical skills, working in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
  • Assists with providing support to a team of cybersecurity professionals in the Regional Security Operations Center (RSOC) to detect, analyze, respond to, and mitigate security incidents in real-time.
  • Participates in the monitoring of network traffic, security alerts, and logs to identify and analyze potential security incidents.
  • May assist with investigating security incidents, analyze their scope and impact, and determine appropriate actions for containment and eradication.
  • Engages in ongoing learning and professional development to stay updated on the latest cybersecurity threats technologies, vulnerabilities, and attack techniques to proactively identify potential risks.
  • Utilizes intrusion detection systems (IDS) and intrusion prevention systems (IPS) to identify and respond to unauthorized access attempts and notifies management for action.
  • Assists and works with Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) tools to correlate and analyze security events and logs.
  • Learns and assists in the identification and remediation of security vulnerabilities in systems and applications.
  • Assists incident response teams to effectively manage and mitigate security incidents, including containment, eradication, and recovery.
  • Maintains, files and organizes incident reports and documentation accordingly.
  • Learns and adheres to established security policies, procedures, and best practices to maintain a high level of security posture.
  • Works closely with other members of the RSOC team, as well as cross-functional teams, to acquire the necessary knowledge and training on how to share information and ensure a coordinated response to security incidents.
  • Maintains an entry level working knowledge of IT network security, business continuity, intrusion detection, incident remediation, monitoring of network and bandwidth resources.
  • May assist in developing and preparing documentation, process documents, ticketing system documentation, metrics reports, and other associated reports.
  • May collaborate with others to continuously improve systems, services, and operations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent.
Preferred Education
Bachelor's degree in information security, computer science, information systems, information assurance, or related field from an accredited university.
Licenses/Certifications
Preferred: Network+, Security+, or similar certification.
Required Experience
Two (2) years of work experience in a related field.
Candidates who have completed a related associate degree or 60 hours of college credit including relevant coursework toward a related degree may be considered for the position in lieu of the required experience.
Preferred Experience
Experience with standard concepts, practices, and procedures for security operation centers.
Equipment
Proficiency in the use of a personal computer and applicable software necessary to perform work assignments e.g., word processing, spreadsheets (Microsoft Office preferred). Use of standard office equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office environment: travel and evening, night, and weekend shift work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with varying constituencies and teams. Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Knowledge of security best practice standards such as the Center for Internet Security (CIS) Top 20 Critical Security Controls, NIST Cybersecurity Framework and OWASP.
