Job description

Job Summary:
Costco IT is responsible for the technical future of Costco Wholesale, the third largest retailer in the world. They are seeking an Assistant Vice President to lead their Joint Operations and Cybersecurity Center, overseeing technology observability and operational monitoring while fostering a culture of engagement and trust within their team.
Responsibilities:
• Leads day-to-day operational and cybersecurity monitoring while providing opportunities for professional development and career growth to staff.
• Oversees and matures observability across the enterprise, including automation, AI-assisted predictive monitoring, and playing a key role in coordinating incident response.
• Matures first line observability activities including building always-true dashboards, automating event handling and triage, and driving behaviors and outcomes through metrics.
• Collaborates with business stakeholders to form strong partnerships, contribute to system-level work, and offer observability advice, to improve the resiliency of systems and the user experience of our members and customers.
• Partners with technology leadership to identify observability gaps and automation opportunities, and lead improvement initiatives to minimize risk of downtime or systems compromise.
• Executes a full range of management responsibilities including budget planning and vendor management.
• Provides mentorship and development to strengthen your team's technical and organizational skills.
• Adapts to the needs of the company as new cyber threats emerge and as company priorities and initiatives change.
Qualifications:
Required:
• 7+ years as a leader and manager with a demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and mentoring.
• Prior experience in defining and setting measurable success criteria (OKRs) for Application and Network Observability, Incident Management, and Incident Response.
• Experience in managing and leading Network Operations Centers (NOC) and/or Security Operations Centers (SOC).
• Experience formulating and executing a technical strategy and roadmap.
• Hands-on leadership and architecture experience with Site Reliability Engineering, MITRE ATT&CK, observability, network operations, and security monitoring.
• Experience in managing network operations.
• Experience in incident response.
• Experience in Enterprise Tabletop.
• Familiarity with APDEX and other methodologies for measuring and improving technical product responsiveness and resiliency across all layers of the OSI stack.
• Executive presence and high emotional intelligence - superb interpersonal, negotiation, and influencing skills; ability to facilitate complex discussions and bring them to resolution.
• 10+ years’ of focused technology experience including deep understanding and experience with network, application availability, and security monitoring.
• 6+ years’ experience with security and monitoring considerations of cloud computing, infrastructure-as-code, and automation of incident response.
• Must have exceptionally strong and current commercial executive and hands-on experience in most/all of these areas: incident management, incident response, network monitoring, chaos engineering, site reliability engineering, application monitoring.
• Ability to work on highly complex projects that require in-depth knowledge within multiple disciplines.
• Real passion for operational excellence in technology, learning mindset, preference for progress over perfection, outcome orientation, data-driven storytelling.
• HIPAA Training and Supervisors Orientation (within 30 days of hire); Leadership Development 101 (within one year); Costco Pay Policies (within 90 days of promotion).
Preferred:
• Bachelor’s degree in an IT-related field and at least 10 years of work experience at a senior leadership level, with at least 5 years of experience leading technical management teams; or an equivalent combination of education and specific work experience as it relates to the role.
• Experience with ServiceNow or Dynatrace.
• GIC Incident Handler Certification
• Fusion Center Experience.
• Proficient in Google Workspace applications, including Sheets, Docs, Slides, and Gmail.
