What does a copywriter do?

A copywriter is a professional who creates written content for advertising, marketing, and promotional materials. Their main goal is to craft persuasive and engaging copy that encourages people to take action, such as buying a product, subscribing to a service, or learning more about a brand. Copywriters work on a variety of materials, including advertisements, websites, emails, social media posts, and product descriptions. They often collaborate with designers, marketers, and clients to ensure the messaging aligns with brand objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a copywriter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Copywriter, you need excellent writing, grammar, and editing skills, often supported by a degree in communications, marketing, or English. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and analytics platforms is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that copywriters can produce compelling, targeted content that meets client objectives and drives engagement.

What are some common challenges copywriters face when collaborating with designers and marketing teams?

Copywriters often need to balance creativity with strategic messaging while working closely with designers and marketing teams. One common challenge is ensuring that the written content aligns seamlessly with the visual elements and overall brand voice. Effective communication and flexibility are crucial, as feedback from multiple stakeholders may require revisions to meet campaign goals. Building strong relationships and maintaining an open feedback loop can help copywriters overcome these challenges and produce cohesive, impactful content.

What is the difference between Copywriter vs Content Writer?

Work EnvironmentAdvertising agencies, marketing teams, corporate marketing departmentsBlogs, online publications, corporate websites, content platforms
Required SkillsMarketing knowledge, persuasive writing, SEO basicsResearch skills, storytelling, informational writing

Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right roles and skills.

Can I be a copywriter with no experience?

Yes, entry-level copywriter positions often do not require prior experience and focus on strong writing skills, creativity, and the ability to learn quickly. Building a portfolio of writing samples and gaining familiarity with tools like Google Docs or content management systems can help you start in the field.

Job description

smartdept. is searching for a Copywriter for a leading sailboat hardware and safety & rescue equipment manufacturer located in Pewaukee, WI. The ideal candidate will come with 2+ years of experience. This is a full-time, hybrid, direct-hire opportunity. Compensation for this position is competitive and based on experience level and fit.
This company specializes in sailboat hardware and also designs safety and rescue equipment used across the marine industry. Their marketing and creative team is lean, and this Copywriter will own a wide range of content across two very different brand voices: a technical, gear-focused voice for sailors and a compliance-driven, spec-accurate voice for the safety and rescue side. This is a high-growth opportunity for someone who wants to build toward a Creative Director path.
What You'll Do:
Write product descriptions, web copy, ad copy, and email campaigns for a consumer-facing audience of around 10,000 end users, plus longer-format B2B trade letters and communications Create and manage content for 40+ social media channels across the brand's various product lines Maintain two distinct brand voices: an approachable, sailing-savvy tone for the marine/sailing side and a precise, compliance-first tone (OSHA, technical specs) for the safety and rescue side Work from creative briefs to translate strategy into copy for defined audiences across web, social, and ad channels. Partner with the creative and marketing team on campaigns from concept through execution
What You'll Need:
Education/Experience: 2+ years of copywriting experience, ideally in a brand, agency, or in-house marketing environment. Experience writing for both B2C and B2B audiences is a plus. Sailing knowledge or experience is a significant plus given the technical, sport-specific language involved. Comfortable managing high-volume, high-variety content output with minimal day-to-day direction.
Nice-to-Have Skills:
Experience writing technical or compliance-driven copy (safety, spec sheets, industry regulations). Social media content experience across multiple channels/platforms. Background or personal interest in sailing, boating, or outdoor/marine industries. Self-starter who can take a creative brief and run without needing to be told what to do next
