Job Summary:

The Clinical Coordinator for the Cath Lab is a registered nurse who operates under the guidance of the Director or Manager of Cardiovascular Services. This role involves overseeing the daily operations and activities of nursing and cardiovascular specialists within the Cath Lab. The Clinical Coordinator acts as a resource for staff, physicians, patients, families, and other departments. Responsibilities include managing staff schedules, call rotations, case loads, and statistics related to the Cath Lab. Additionally, this position entails performing various administrative tasks to support the Director and engaging in a range of clinical procedures that require independent judgment and the use of specialized equipment for diagnosing and treating diseases.

The Clinical Coordinator is tasked with coordinating and implementing the nursing process, drawing on extensive knowledge and experience. This role requires providing and coordinating patient care while being mindful of age-specific needs. The Clinical Coordinator also addresses the educational requirements of patients, families, or support systems, considering biological, emotional, developmental, and psychosocial aspects. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, specialty groups, and physicians is essential. Furthermore, the Clinical Coordinator ensures compliance with regulations and readiness, as well as initiatives focused on quality and patient safety. Direct patient care in the Cath Lab is also part of this role as needed.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:Clinical Skills
  • Employs critical thinking abilities.
  • Provides care in complex situations involving multiple patient issues.
  • Prepares patients for procedures.
  • Exhibits knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques.
  • Demonstrates proficiency as a circulating nurse and monitors during all procedures in the Cath Lab, including all relevant equipment and software.
  • Shows capability to learn and perform the duties of the scrub role during procedures in the Cath Lab.
  • Maintains proficiency in core nursing skills and competencies.
  • Participates in Cath Lab call rotation.
  • Adheres to infection control policies and procedures, verifying written orders and seeking clarification when necessary.
  • Properly disposes of all special waste, including sharps and chemotherapy, in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Administers medications and moderate sedation in the Cath Lab as per established protocols.
  • Recognizes and appropriately reports EKG and hemodynamic changes.
  • Maintains the integrity of the sterile field and demonstrates knowledge of sterile procedures.
  • Conducts quality control checks on the ACT machine and GEM OPL oxygen saturation machine, documenting findings accurately and communicating any discrepancies with the laboratory.
  • Opens and closes the interventional suite, cardiac cath lab, and recovery areas, ensuring proper documentation and supply management. Performs defibrillation and crash cart checks.
Quality and Patient Safety
  • Confirms patient identity using two identifiers, such as armbands and date of birth.
  • Verifies written orders and seeks clarification when needed.
  • Understands and complies with verbal order protocols, ensuring necessary follow-up with written orders.
  • Utilizes pre-procedural verification and Time Out processes effectively.
  • Complies with site and side marking protocols when applicable.
  • Interprets, supports, and implements departmental SCIP initiatives.
  • Adheres to infection control policies and procedures.
  • Disposes of special waste appropriately, following hospital guidelines.
  • Keeps accurate and up-to-date documentation of nursing care to ensure quality integration of information for the healthcare team.
Job Responsibilities and Supervision
  • Must be adaptable with hours to accommodate departmental needs, including pre-procedure preparations and post-monitoring of outpatients as necessary.
  • Understands communication lines and authority, managing communications effectively while being dependable and cooperative.
  • Introduces self to patients and/or guardians upon entering the room, using appropriate scripting techniques.
  • Completes required paperwork efficiently.
  • Ensures the Cath Lab procedure room is sterile and safe for patients.
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail and physical stamina to manage lengthy cases.
  • Oversees the Cath Lab schedule, including patients, nurses, and cardiovascular specialists.
  • Maintains statistics related to Cath Lab productivity and daily operations.
  • Manages supply orders and assists with inventory control.
  • Coordinates and delegates patient care assignments in the Cath Lab, ensuring appropriate staffing and breaks.
  • Participates in recruitment efforts, interviews candidates, and assists with performance evaluations.
  • Contributes to chest pain center education, statistics, and maintenance.
  • Responsible for orienting new personnel, assigning preceptors, and communicating progress to new employees and the director.
  • Assists the Director with daily Kronos entry and review.
  • Maintains workflow to optimize patient throughput, maximizing equipment utilization while meeting patient expectations regarding wait times and thoroughness of exams.
  • Acts as the first point of contact for employee concerns.
  • Assists with employee performance management, including issuing anecdotal records and recommending further performance management if necessary.
  • Establishes and modifies departmental protocols with guidance from physicians and the department director.
