Controls Engineer Plc Programming information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Controls Engineer specializing in PLC programming, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controls Engineer in PLC programming, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, automation, and industrial control systems, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with PLC platforms (such as Allen-Bradley or Siemens), HMI/SCADA systems, and programming languages like ladder logic is essential, and certifications like Siemens Certified Programmer or Rockwell Automation credentials are highly valued. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you design, troubleshoot, and collaborate on complex automation projects. These skills ensure reliable, safe, and efficient system operation, which is critical for manufacturing productivity and minimizing downtime.

What are the typical challenges faced when working as a Controls Engineer specializing in PLC programming?

Controls Engineers specializing in PLC programming often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex automation systems under tight deadlines, adapting to rapidly evolving technologies, and ensuring seamless integration between hardware and software components. They may also need to coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including electricians, mechanical engineers, and production staff, to implement solutions efficiently. Staying updated on industry standards and maintaining strong documentation practices are essential for long-term project success and career growth.

What does a Controls Engineer specializing in PLC programming do?

A Controls Engineer with expertise in PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) programming is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automated control systems used in manufacturing and industrial environments. They program PLCs to monitor and control machinery, ensuring equipment operates safely and efficiently. This role often involves troubleshooting system issues, integrating new automation technologies, and collaborating with other engineers to optimize production processes.

Is PLC still in demand?

Controls engineers specializing in PLC programming are in steady demand due to ongoing automation in manufacturing, energy, and process industries. Skills in ladder logic, Siemens, Allen-Bradley, and certifications like CCNA or ISA are valuable for securing these roles, which often require troubleshooting and system integration expertise.

Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW

Provide technical leadership and design of electrical controls and PLC programming of a diverse range of custom automated systems. The diversity of the systems requires a strong aptitude to grasp a wide range of processes and components. The systems consist of a variety of electrical, hydraulic, mechanical and measurement components including:

  • PLC and an associated ladder logic program
  • Human-machine interface (HMI) and associated programming
  • AC motor controls (e.g. contactors and/or variable speed drives)
  • Hydraulic and pneumatic components
  • Electro-mechanical components
  • Pressure Transducers, Temperature Transmitters, Flow Meters, Level Sensor, Encoders, etc.
  • Proximity sensors, Relays, Pushbuttons
  • Machine Safety: Safety Controllers, Light Curtains, Scanners, Guard Door Switches, etc.
  • Other standard electrical control components

The Controls Engineer will work closely with the Project Manager, Systems Engineer and Client to accomplish the electrical control and programming requirements of each system. The control engineer will be responsible for establishing design concepts and budgets, executing the design and programming and working with system technicians to build the systems. Execution requires meeting the delivery schedule and budgets as established for purchased components and assembly costs.

 RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Strong technical understanding and experience concerning the design of electrical control systems for custom machines and PLC and HMI programming. Allen-Bradley or Siemens are typical.
  2. Effective leadership and communication to provide technical direction to other disciplines.
  3. Develop electrical control concepts to meet Customer requirements and present those concepts verbally and in written quotations.
  4. Accurately estimate all required electrical control system costs. This includes but is not limited to design labor, programming labor, build labor, purchased hardware costs and commissioning.
  5. Knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical or SOLIDWORKS Electrical CAD software to create, modify and/or review electrical control designs is required. Experience using SOLIDWORKS Electrical strongly preferred.
  6. Work closely with the project team and/or Customer representatives as required to review and modify design functionality.
  7. Supporting Titan personnel and outside suppliers during the design and build phases of a project in order to explain design intent, oversee progress, answer questions, aid in solving problems and give technical direction.
  8. Proficiency in using Microsoft Office products.
  9. Ability to take direction from the project manager and be an effective communicator.
