Remote International Plc Programmer information

What is a remote international PLC programmer?

A Remote International PLC Programmer is a specialist who designs, writes, tests, and troubleshoots software for programmable logic controllers (PLCs) from a remote location, often serving clients across different countries. They use their expertise in automation and industrial control systems to configure, maintain, and optimize equipment and processes in manufacturing, energy, and other industries. Working remotely, they connect to systems over secure networks to perform diagnostics and updates, reducing the need for on-site visits. This role requires strong technical skills, knowledge of international standards, and the ability to communicate effectively with clients worldwide.

What are some common challenges faced by remote international PLC programmers when working with global teams?

Remote International PLC Programmers often encounter challenges related to coordinating across different time zones, managing communication with diverse teams, and addressing varying technical standards or regulations in different countries. Effective collaboration requires strong documentation practices and frequent virtual meetings to ensure alignment on project goals and troubleshooting strategies. Additionally, remote work can present difficulties in accessing on-site hardware, making remote diagnostic tools and clear communication critical for success.

What is the difference between Remote International Plc Programmer vs Remote International Software Developer?

AspectRemote International Plc ProgrammerRemote International Software Developer
CredentialsTypically requires programming certifications, such as Microsoft Certified or specific PLC programming certificationsUsually holds a degree in computer science or software engineering, with certifications like Microsoft Certified or AWS certifications
Work EnvironmentPrimarily works remotely, often with industrial or manufacturing clients, focusing on PLC systemsWorks remotely or onsite, developing software applications across various industries
Industry UsageCommonly used in manufacturing, automation, and industrial sectorsUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and other software-driven industries

The main difference is that Remote International Plc Programmers specialize in programming PLC systems for industrial automation, while Remote International Software Developers focus on creating software applications across diverse industries. Both roles require technical certifications and can be performed remotely, but their industry focus and technical expertise differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote international PLC programmer?

A Remote International PLC Programmer needs expertise in PLC programming, electrical engineering fundamentals, and automation systems, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree or technical certification. Familiarity with industry-standard PLC brands (such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Schneider Electric), SCADA systems, and remote troubleshooting tools is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating with global teams and resolving technical issues remotely. These competencies ensure reliable automation solutions, smooth cross-border project execution, and swift response to technical challenges in diverse industrial environments.

Job description

What You Will Do

Johnson Controls' Data Center Thermal Technology Solutions group is seeking a Senior Modeling Engineer. As a member of the modeling team, you will develop and apply numerical models to simulate the end-to-end performance of data center cooling systems. You will play a key role on cross-functional teams responsible for creating comprehensive thermal solutions for data center applications.

Your primary focus will be simulating system performance and providing design and application guidance based on model results. As part of the advanced development team, you will also stay current on emerging technologies in the data center cooling space and evaluate innovations that may influence future product offerings.

We prefer to have this candidate based in our Glendale, WI, or York, PA, office; however, this can also be a remote opportunity for the right candidate!

How You Will Do It

  • Develop numerical simulations of thermal components commonly used in data center applications.
  • Integrate subsystems into complete thermal solutions, coordinating across cooling loops, controls, and heat-rejection equipment.
  • Use simulation tools to predict chip-to-ambient performance of data center cooling systems.
  • Apply system-level performance models to provide technical guidance to customers.
  • Present project status, technical findings, and strategic recommendations across departments.
  • Deliver presentations and/or write white papers communicating JCI's technical perspective on emerging technologies and system architectures.
  • Actively participate in industry groups such as ASHRAE and the Open Compute Project.

What You Will Need

Required

  • Master's or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • 3+ years of industry experience with thermal products or systems.
  • Strong theoretical foundation in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
  • Experience with HVAC system design, refrigerant cycles, and component selection.
  • Proficiency with numerical simulation tools for building and thermal applications (e.g., Modelica, MATLAB/Simulink, EES, EnergyPlus).
  • Broad cross-domain knowledge spanning thermal, controls, and electrical systems-generalists with strong multidomain capability are highly valued.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365/Excel, including basic macros/VBA for data analysis and reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to execute cross-functional projects.

Preferred

  • Python scripting and environment management (package installation, virtual environments, basic automation).
  • Fundamentals of controls engineering (feedback loops, PID tuning, system response).
  • Basic understanding of electrical systems (motor sizing, VFDs, power distribution).
  • Experience with refrigeration system design and refrigerant properties.
  • Familiarity with data center cooling architectures (direct liquid cooling, rear-door heat exchangers, CDUs).

Expertise in one or more thermal domains (CDUs, chillers, dry coolers, coldplate systems).
