Controls Engineer Position Summary
The Controls Engineer will support extrusion manufacturing operations by designing, maintaining, and improving industrial automation and control systems that drive production performance. This role is responsible for enhancing equipment reliability, leading automation and controls projects, troubleshooting complex systems, and implementing technology solutions that improve safety, quality, productivity, and sustainability within a high-performance aerospace manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • Support and optimize PLC, HMI, SCADA, drive, and motion-control systems for extrusion production equipment.
  • Lead automation, controls, and electrical upgrade projects, including equipment installations and modernization efforts.
  • Design, develop, and implement control strategies to improve equipment performance and reliability.
  • Manage capital projects involving automation, control systems, and process improvements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues involving PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, servos, networks, instrumentation, and process controls.
  • Develop and maintain electrical schematics, control narratives, and system documentation. Coordinate project work with maintenance personnel, contractors, OEMs, and vendors.
  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance programs for controls and automation systems.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, reliability, productivity, and energy efficiency.
  • Collaborate with production, maintenance, quality, and safety teams to achieve operational objectives.
  • Support commissioning, startup, and validation of new equipment and control systems.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience in industrial controls, automation, or manufacturing engineering.
  • Strong working knowledge of PLC programming and troubleshooting, preferably Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix platforms.
  • Experience with HMIs, SCADA systems, industrial networking, VFDs, servos, motion control, and instrumentation.
  • Ability to read and develop electrical schematics, P&IDs, and control system documentation.
  • Experience managing automation and capital improvement projects from concept through commissioning.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and project leadership skills.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety systems and machine safeguarding principles.
  • Experience in aerospace manufacturing, aluminum extrusion, metals processing, or heavy industrial environments preferred.
  • Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire Visa sponsorship is not available for this position
  • This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. §730, et seq.) and/or the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). Authorizations from the relevant government agency may be required to meet export control compliance requirements.

PreferredQualifications:
  • Experience in aluminum extrusion or metalworking industries.
  • Familiarity with AS9100, NadCap, or other aerospace quality standards.
  • Exposure to casting/molten metal facilities.

Lafayette Operations in Lafayette, IN is located approximately 60 miles from the state's capital, Indianapolis and is the home to Purdue University. Our Lafayette location has been continuously running in Lafayette community since 1938. We are an Aluminum Extrusions plant for Aerospace, Automotive, Industrial and Defense facility.
