How do you become a controller?

To become a controller, candidates typically need a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, along with several years of experience in accounting or financial management. Professional certifications such as CPA or CMA can enhance prospects, and strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills are essential for success in the role.

Are controllers in demand?

Controllers, which are financial management professionals responsible for accounting and financial reporting, are in steady demand across various industries. Strong analytical skills, accounting certifications such as CPA or CMA, and proficiency with financial software increase employability in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controller, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controller, you need strong expertise in accounting principles, financial reporting, and compliance, typically supported by a CPA or relevant accounting degree. Proficiency with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems like SAP or Oracle, as well as advanced Excel skills, is highly valuable. Exceptional analytical thinking, attention to detail, and leadership abilities help Controllers manage teams and communicate financial insights effectively. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring accurate financial management, regulatory compliance, and strategic business decision-making.

What is a controller?

A Controller is a senior accounting professional responsible for overseeing the financial reporting, accounting operations, and internal controls of an organization. Their role is critical in helping businesses make informed financial decisions and maintain fiscal health.

What qualifications do you need to be a controller?

Controllers often encounter challenges such as adapting to new financial systems, understanding existing internal controls, and integrating into the company's established reporting processes. They may also need to quickly build relationships with cross-functional teams and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements specific to the industry. INTERIM CORPORATE CONTROLLER | CONTRACT (3 to 4 MONTHS)
Looking for your next contract engagement? We have an immediate, confidential opportunity for an experienced accounting leader to step in and make an impact from day one.
We're conducting a search on behalf of a well-established organization in a regulated industry. Our client needs an experienced Corporate Controller on an interim basis, someone who can hit the ground running, stabilize and lead the finance function, and deliver results without a long ramp-up period.
If you thrive in dynamic environments and know how to lead with confidence in a short-term capacity, this could be a great opportunity for you.
THE OPPORTUNITY AT A GLANCE
Type: Contract | Interim
Duration: 34 months
Start: Immediate / As soon as available
Industry: Regulated (details shared upon engagement)
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
From day one, you'll step into a high-visibility role and take ownership of:
Overseeing day-to-day accounting and financial operations, ensuring continuity and compliance.
Leading financial close processes (monthly/quarterly) with accuracy and efficiency.
Reviewing and overseeing financial statement preparation and consolidation.
Identifying and addressing gaps in internal controls, processes, and reconciliations.
Delivering timely financial reporting and analysis to senior leadership.
Supporting or managing any ongoing audit, tax, or regulatory compliance activity.
Partnering with Finance leadership on budgeting and forecasting as needed.
Stabilizing and supporting the accounting team through the interim period.
WHAT YOU BRING
CPA or Licensed Public Accountant designation preferred.
Proven controller-level or senior accounting experience.
Strong background in financial reporting, consolidations, and accounting operations.
Ability to assess, adapt, and lead quickly in an unfamiliar environment.
Experience in regulated industries (insurance, public accounting, or similar) a plus.
ERP system proficiency; ability to navigate existing systems with minimal onboarding.
