Controller Manager information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Controller Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Controller Manager, you need a robust background in accounting, financial reporting, and regulatory compliance, usually supported by a CPA or relevant accounting degree. Expertise in ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, advanced Excel skills, and familiarity with financial analysis software are common technical requirements. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for managing teams and collaborating across departments. These skills ensure accurate financial oversight, strategic decision-making, and compliance within the organization.

How does a Controller Manager typically balance strategic oversight with day-to-day financial operations?

A Controller Manager is responsible for ensuring both the accuracy of daily financial transactions and the alignment of financial practices with the organization’s strategic goals. This often involves managing a team that handles routine accounting tasks while also participating in high-level planning, budgeting, and financial analysis. Regular collaboration with executive leadership is common, especially when setting financial targets or evaluating business performance. The role requires strong organizational skills and the ability to shift between hands-on problem-solving and big-picture financial management.

What is a Controller Manager?

As a top-ranked agency (PPAI #27, ASI Top 40), we're looking for a driven Account Manager to join our team and lead the charge within our key global enterprise accounts.
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to lead the accounting function for a growing small-to-mid-sized business. This role is responsible for overseeing GAAP-compliant financial reporting and the month-end close process, with additional responsibility for benefits administration and coordination with payroll-related activities. The Controller will partner closely with senior leadership to strengthen internal controls, enhance financial processes, and support data-driven decision-making. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, process-driven, and capable of balancing day-to-day execution with high standards for accuracy, timeliness, and financial oversight.
Be A LEADER Every Day
What You’ll Do:
  • Oversee financial reporting and month-end close processes, including bank and credit card reconciliations
  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles; ensure timely and accurate GAAP-compliant financial statements
  • Ensure the accuracy, integrity, and consistency of all financial records and reports
  • Advise on and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures
  • Coordinate commission and bonus reporting in support of multi-state payroll processing
  • Lead health insurance and benefits administration, including annual renewals
  • Prepare and file monthly sales tax reports and payments
  • Support external CPA-led review activities and related inquiries
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, scalability, and reporting quality
  • Support accounting system enhancements and evolving best practices as the organization grows
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with leadership and teams across the business
  • Perform additional duties as needed
What You’ll Bring:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (required)
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including prior Controller or Assistant Controller experience
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting requirements
  • CPA preferred, but not required
  • Experience leading or reviewing work within an accounting team
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online
  • Payroll-related experience required (multi-state preferred)
  • Strong, process-driven mindset with the ability to work cross-functionally
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel
Why This Role?
  • High-visibility position partnering directly with senior leadership
  • Opportunity to influence accounting strategy, systems, and operational processes
  • Broad ownership across accounting, compliance, and select operational functions
