Contractual Data Strategy information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contractual Data Strategy professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contractual Data Strategy professional, you need expertise in data analysis, contract management, and business strategy, often supported by a degree in business, analytics, or a related field. Familiarity with data analytics tools (like SQL, Tableau, or Power BI), contract lifecycle management (CLM) systems, and relevant certifications such as Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, negotiation skills, and clear communication help professionals bridge the gap between data insights and contractual objectives. These skills are crucial for aligning data-driven strategies with organizational goals while ensuring compliance and maximizing value from contracts.

What are some common challenges faced in a Contractual Data Strategy role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in a Contractual Data Strategy role often encounter challenges related to aligning data initiatives with contractual obligations and client expectations. Navigating varying data privacy laws, ensuring data quality, and coordinating between legal, IT, and business teams are frequent hurdles. Successful data strategists address these by establishing clear communication channels, developing robust data governance frameworks, and staying current with regulatory changes. Proactively managing stakeholder expectations and documenting data processes also help mitigate risks and foster smoother project execution.

What is a Contractual Data Strategist?

A Contractual Data Strategist is a professional hired on a contract basis to help organizations develop and implement strategies for managing, analyzing, and leveraging data. Their responsibilities typically include assessing current data practices, recommending improvements, ensuring data governance and compliance, and driving data-driven decision-making. These specialists work across various departments to align data initiatives with business goals, often bringing expertise in data analytics, data security, and industry regulations. Because they work contractually, their involvement may be project-based or limited to a specific period or objective.

What is the difference between Contractual Data Strategy vs Data Analyst?

Position Summary

The Category Manager - Enterprise Data & Research Services will help lead the firm's enterprise-wide strategy for externally sourced data, including market data (e.g., Bloomberg, Refinitiv, S&P, Moody's, MSCI, FactSet, ICE), financial benchmarks, research platforms, ESG and alternative datasets, and related information services.

This is a high-impact role responsible for helping to define and execute a multi-year enterprise data strategy, strengthening commercial leverage across fragmented spend, structuring complex supplier negotiations, and driving measurable cost optimization while safeguarding licensing and regulatory compliance.

The successful candidate will serve as the commercial owner of the Enterprise Data category and a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders across Investments, Technology, Legal, Finance, and Risk. The role combines strategic sourcing, executive stakeholder engagement, licensing governance oversight, and enterprise-level supplier management.

Operational tracking and analytics support are provided by Category Support and Procurement Strategy & Analytics, enabling this role to focus on strategic value creation and commercial leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Enterprise Data Category Strategy

  • Define and execute a comprehensive, multi-year enterprise data strategy aligned with firm priorities and growth objectives.
  • Centralize and rationalize fragmented data spend to improve visibility, leverage, and enterprise coordination.
  • Develop and manage a forward-looking renewal and negotiation roadmap to proactively optimize commercial outcomes.
  • Identify opportunities for vendor consolidation, pricing model restructuring, entitlement optimization, and long-term value creation.
  • Serve as the firm's subject matter leader on enterprise data market dynamics, supplier ecosystems, and emerging data trends.

Strategic Vendor & Commercial Management

  • Lead complex negotiations with major global data providers and exchanges.
  • Structure multi-year agreements that align pricing, entitlements, and contractual protections with enterprise demand forecasts.
  • Establish executive-level supplier governance frameworks and performance management disciplines.
  • Drive accountability around licensing risk, audit exposure, and contractual compliance.
  • Partner closely with Legal to strengthen commercial protections and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with senior business stakeholders to balance cost discipline with strategic data requirements.

Governance, Risk & Enterprise Alignment

  • Oversee enterprise-wide licensing governance standards and entitlement optimization initiatives.
  • Lead audit strategy and vendor review coordination in partnership with Risk and Technology.
  • Ensure proactive management of auto-renewal exposure and contractual risk.
  • Drive cross-functional alignment to eliminate redundant subscriptions and improve data consumption discipline.
  • Promote transparency and executive visibility into enterprise data spend and risk posture.

Governance, Risk & Enterprise Alignment

  • Deliver executive-level reporting on category performance, cost optimization, supplier risk exposure, and renewal sequencing.
  • Partner with Procurement Strategy & Analytics to validate savings and enhance KPI visibility.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to improve structural efficiency in data procurement and usage governance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Supply Chain, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • 6-12 years of experience in enterprise data management, market data strategy, or strategic sourcing within financial services.
  • Deep expertise in financial data products, licensing models (including display and non-display usage), exchange governance, and vendor pricing structures.
  • Proven track record leading complex, high-value negotiations with global data providers.
  • Experience advising senior stakeholders and influencing enterprise-wide commercial decisions.
  • Strong commercial acumen and financial modeling capability.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate strategically while driving disciplined execution.
  • Executive-level communication and presentation skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel; familiarity with ERP, spend management, and analytics platforms (e.g., QuickBase, Tableau, Power BI).
