This job opening is for one Traffic System Technician I or II depending on business need and applicant's qualifications and experience. Qualification and experience will determine the applicant's position and pay. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.
Traffic Systems Technician I - A16 | $40,918 - $61,130 yearly
Traffic Systems Technician II - A17 | $42,976 - $64,469 yearly

Position Description
Performs entry-level work activities related to the installation, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of traffic systems, communication, illumination and/or data collection devices/systems. Work may be performed in heavy traffic and may require extensive statewide travel. Work may require contact with governmental and private entities. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.
Essential Duties:
Traffic Systems Technician I or II:
- Assists in installing, maintaining, modifying, adjusting, testing, troubleshooting, inspecting and/or repair of
electronic traffic control, communication, traffic data collection, and/or illumination systems.
- Assists in maintaining stock and equipment to ensure necessary tools, products and materials are available for scheduled
projects.
- Assists in operating, maintaining and servicing equipment such as bucket trucks, drilling and pole setting rigs, concrete
saws, trenching machines, cable locating instruments, insulation testers and/or 18-wheel calibration truck.
- Assists in responding to complaints and identifying problems regarding traffic signal timing/traffic congestion and
assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.
- Assists in the fabrication of traffic control and/or data collection devices that are not available from the industry.
- Follows applicable safety procedures when working in an area where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines,
water and sewage lines and heavy traffic are located.
- Learns to identify, troubleshoot, problem solve and identify possible new site characteristics.
- Learns to install, maintain and replace TV cameras, motorized LED and fiber optic signs and cable and communication
modems; monitors communication devices/systems.
- Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic
data collection equipment.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Traffic Systems Technician II:
- *Assists in programming traffic data collection systems to create, modify station description records, station direction
of travel, lane of travel, and/or algorithms for vehicle classification.
- *Installs, maintains, modifies, adjusts, tests, troubleshoots, inspects and/or repairs electronic traffic control,
communication, traffic data collection and/or illumination systems.
- *Installs, troubleshoots and maintains hardware and software related to traffic systems, Intelligent Transportation
Systems or the Statewide Traffic Analysis and Reporting System.
- *Operates, maintains and services equipment such as bucket trucks, drilling and pole setting rigs, concrete saws,
trenching machines, cable locating instruments, insulation testers and/or 18-wheel calibration truck.
- *Prepares written reports that provide feedback on systems including ease of installation and setup, status of inventory
needs, any problems encountered or other issues.
- Assists in responding to complaints and identifying problems regarding traffic signal timing/traffic congestion and
assists in developing recommendations for long-term solutions.
- Assists in the fabrication of traffic control and/or data collection devices that are not available from the industry.
- Follows applicable safety procedures when working in an area where other utilities such as high voltage lines, gas lines,
water and sewage lines and heavy traffic are located.
- Responds to emergency situations to assist with repair and maintenance of traffic signals, systems, lighting or traffic
data collection equipment.
- Sets forms and pours and finishes concrete bases for traffic control devices and traffic data collection equipment; as
required moves bags of cement, signal heads/poles and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
Experience for a Traffic System Tech I: No experience required
Experience for a Traffic System Tech II: 1 YEAR Construction, electronic troubleshooting, electrical construction/installation, electromechanical, traffic management,
transportation engineering, design, traffic systems maintenance
(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)
Licenses and Certifications:

• Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
• Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Valid CDL License
Competencies:
Traffic Systems Technician I and II:

Traffic Systems Technician II:
- * Construction equipment operations

- * Reading and interpreting applicable plans, schematics, blueprints and maps
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
- Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
- Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
- Pushing-using upper extremities to press against object with force to move in a direction
- Pulling-using upper extremities to exert force moving objects in a sustained motion
- Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
- Visual Acuity-operate machines, such as drill presses, power saws, and mills
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment
