What does a contract Toyota software engineer do?

A Contract Toyota Software Engineer is a software professional hired on a temporary basis to work on Toyota's software projects. They may be involved in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining software systems used in Toyota vehicles or supporting business operations. Their work often focuses on automotive technologies such as embedded systems, connectivity, and vehicle automation, following Toyota's specific standards and guidelines. Contract engineers collaborate closely with other engineering teams, participate in code reviews, and ensure the software meets safety and quality requirements. They are typically employed through staffing agencies or as independent contractors for a specific project duration.

The Role:
We're looking for an Embedded Software Engineering Supervisor to lead a team developing firmware for advanced energy and motive power systems. This role combines technical leadership with hands-on engineering, supporting the development of Battery Management Systems (BMS), energy management systems, fuel cell controllers, and other embedded control platforms.
You'll guide a team of engineers while partnering with electrical, mechanical, controls, and systems engineering to deliver reliable products from concept through production. If you enjoy solving complex technical problems, mentoring engineers, and building practical solutions, we'd like to hear from you.
What You'll Be Doing:
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of up to seven embedded software engineers while overseeing project priorities, deliverables, and software quality.
  • Design and implement embedded firmware in C/C++ for Battery Management Systems (BMS), fuel cell controllers, energy management systems, and related products using RTOS and bare-metal architectures.
  • Build reusable software components that support multiple embedded platforms.
  • Review software architecture, code, and technical designs while providing guidance on development approaches.
  • Partner with electrical, mechanical, controls, and systems engineers to integrate software with hardware.
  • Support products throughout the full development lifecycle, from concept and prototyping through production and ongoing enhancements.
  • Coordinate technical efforts with suppliers, contractors, and external partners.
  • Promote sound software development practices, continuous improvement, and effective project execution.
  • Travel up to 10%.

What We're Looking For:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • 5+ years of embedded software or firmware development experience.
  • Proficiency in C/C++ for resource-constrained embedded systems using bare-metal and Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS).
  • Background developing software for battery management, energy storage, power electronics, motor controls, or similar embedded applications.
  • Solid understanding of interrupts, multitasking, threading, synchronization, memory management, and other operating system fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with embedded communication protocols including CAN, CAN FD, CANopen, SPI, I²C, and UART.
  • Skilled in embedded debugging using tools such as JTAG, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and integrated development environments.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, hardware specifications, and system documentation.
  • Comfortable working with Git, Jira, SonarQube, and modern source control and software quality tools.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, mentor engineers, and build strong relationships across technical teams, suppliers, and customers.

What Sets You Apart:
  • Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Battery Management System (BMS), energy storage, high-voltage battery, or fuel cell development.
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards such as ISO 26262 or IEC 61508.
  • Embedded development using ARM Cortex processors, DSPs, or comparable microcontroller architectures.
  • MATLAB, Simulink, LabVIEW, or model-based design tools.
  • Exposure to robotics, industrial automation, automotive, aerospace, medical devices, or other safety-critical industries.
  • Leadership in Agile software development environments and continuous improvement initiatives.

Where and When You'll Work:
  • This is an in-person role located at our Rochester, New York office-ideal for those who thrive in a hands-on, team-oriented environment.
