Contract Onshape and Contract CAD Designer roles both involve CAD software skills and project-based work in design and engineering. The main difference lies in the specific software expertise; Contract Onshape requires proficiency in Onshape, while Contract CAD Designer roles may involve various CAD tools. Both roles are common in engineering industries and often offer remote or on-site work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Onshape Designer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract Onshape Designer, you need expertise in 3D CAD modeling, engineering design principles, and a background in mechanical or product design, usually backed by a relevant degree or experience. Proficiency with Onshape CAD software and familiarity with cloud-based collaboration tools are essential for efficient project delivery. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help you stand out when working with clients and distributed teams. These skills ensure high-quality, collaborative design solutions that meet client specifications and project deadlines.

What are the typical responsibilities for a Contract Onshape professional working with engineering teams?

As a Contract Onshape professional, you will primarily be responsible for creating, editing, and managing 3D CAD models and assemblies using the Onshape platform. Your role often involves collaborating closely with engineers, designers, and project managers to ensure that models meet technical specifications and project requirements. You may also be tasked with revising designs based on feedback, maintaining version control, and occasionally providing technical support or training to team members less familiar with Onshape. The work is typically project-based, requiring strong communication skills and the ability to adapt quickly to new team environments and workflows.

What are Contract Onshape jobs?

Contract Onshape jobs are temporary or project-based positions where professionals use Onshape, a cloud-based computer-aided design (CAD) software, to create and manage 3D models and engineering drawings. These roles typically involve collaborating with clients or teams to design products, components, or systems using Onshape’s online platform. Contractors may work remotely or on-site, providing specialized CAD skills for specific projects without long-term employment commitments. Such positions are common in industries like engineering, manufacturing, and product design, where there is a need for flexible, skilled CAD professionals.

Job description

Our Company

MISO develops technology that elevates human potential in the commercial kitchen.

We’re engineering production-ready robotic systems that tightly integrate perception, real-time decision making, and electromechanical controls to automate the most dangerous, least desirable tasks in food preparation. That means building software that understands the physical world as it actually behaves, and hardware that can execute precisely in the face of chaos. Success is measured in uptime, throughput, and trust from our customers, not demos.

Our flagship platform, Flippy, is already operating in high-volume restaurant kitchens across seven states. Zippy, our Kitchen Intelligence software centralizes all operational data in our broader ecosystem, expanding the role of AI enabled autonomy in real-world operations. Backed by industry leaders, including Ecolab (NYSE: ECL), Miso combines the stability of a proven commercial product with the technical depth and ambition of a company passionately innovating to solve foundational problems in robotics and restaurant operations.

If you’re excited by hard constraints, real customers, and the challenge of making machines perform reliably where failure isn’t an option, you’ll find meaningful problems to work on here.

The Role

The Senior Mechanical Engineer is a highly skilled, hands-on role critical to bringing Miso Robotics' innovative products from concept to high-volume manufacturing. As the owner of mechanical design, you'll drive the development of complex electro-mechanical parts and assemblies—including plastics, sheet metal, and welded structures—for mass production. This requires applying a deep understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DfM), Design for Assembly (DfA), and Design for Reliability (DfR), using strong mechanical engineering fundamentals to create detailed drawing packages, manufacturing instructions, and comprehensive engineering test plans while maintaining strong command of GD&T and tolerance stacks.

This position requires end-to-end hardware ownership throughout a product's life cycle. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead the development and qualification of new products, subsystems, and improvements to the Flippy system. Key responsibilities include managing all related Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) and ensuring seamless cross-functional collaboration with electrical, software, and external contract manufacturing teams to meet aggressive hardware delivery timelines and achieve successful product deployment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Modeling and design of mechanical and electro-mechanical parts and assemblies including plastics, sheet metal, aluminum extrusions, welded structures, fasteners, and other components for high volume production
  • Mechanical design analysis including thermal, structural, design for assembly, and design for test
  • Develop engineering test plans for designs
  • Create drawing packages and manufacturing instructions for parts and assemblies
  • Assist in engineering prototype builds and component fabrication
  • Collaborate with other systems, electrical, software, and motion, to take designs from concept through prototype to mass production
  • Own components of the hardware delivery timeline and overall success from concept to deployment
  • Own a portion or all of the manufacturing value chain for a certain product or set of products
  • Develop process flows, breaking down large, complex assemblies into a logical part flow of subassemblies and sub-processes
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration
  • Develop and qualify manufacturing processes and tooling
  • Create engineering documentation
  • Manage and issue Engineering Change Orders (ECOs)
  •  Work with contract manufacturers
  •  Work with technicians and other engineers hands-on, building Prototype hardware

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of full-time industry experience in mechanical design-related field or demonstrated technical excellence in product design and analysis
  • Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Reliability (DFR) principles.
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals.
  • Proven record of rolling out and delivering products to market
  • Strong organization, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stacks, design for manufacturing/automation/test/reliability (DFM/DFA/DFT/DFR).
  • Experience with DFMEA and PFMEA
  • Experience using Onshape and/or Solidworks
  • Experience with PLM systems, engineering changes, deviations, BOM structuring, etc.
  • Experience with modeling, finite element analysis (FEA).
Compensation

$120,000-$140,000  Annually + Benefits

The stated compensation range reflects only the targeted base salary range for candidates residing in the Los Angeles Metro area and excludes additional earnings such as bonus and benefits. If your salary requirements fall outside of the range, we still encourage you to apply.

At Miso Robotics, we are committed to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and equitable workplace where every team member is valued and respected. We believe that diversity in our team drives innovation and creativity, which is why we strive to create a welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, or veteran status.
