Mechanical Engineer - Battery Pack Design
Novi, MI
On-Site Role
$40-65/hr (depending on years of experience)
ABOUT THE ROLE
Join a leading client in the advanced energy and battery technology industry as a Mechanical Engineer specializing in battery pack and module design. This is a 6-month contract-to-hire opportunity based in Novi, MI, focused on the mechanical design and development of battery pack components and sub-systems from concept through production. You will drive design decisions, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and support hands-on prototyping and manufacturing in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment. This role requires strong technical expertise, cross-functional coordination, and a passion for innovation in energy systems.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Own mechanical design of one or more battery pack components or sub-systems from concept through product launch
  • Drive design decisions and collaborate with systems, electrical, and analysis teams to ensure all design requirements are met
  • Identify design risks and develop prototypes to validate and mitigate issues
  • Engage with suppliers to define specifications, obtain quotes, and support component development
  • Create 3D CAD models and 2D drawings with GD&T for complex assemblies
  • Support hands-on prototype builds and work closely with manufacturing and quality teams
  • Perform tolerance stack analyses to ensure proper fit and functionality
  • Ensure proper electrical isolation and environmental durability (thermal, vibration, sealing, etc.)
  • Optimize designs using analytical, numerical, and empirical methods
  • Contribute to technical problem solving and continuous product improvement
WHAT YOU BRING
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 2+ years of mechanical design experience (5+ years for Senior level)
  • Experience designing components such as castings, stampings, extrusions, plastics, sealing systems, bus bars, or cooling systems
  • Strong 3D CAD experience (Onshape or similar CAD tools)
  • Experience working with suppliers and design for manufacturability (DFM)
  • Familiarity with low- to mid-volume manufacturing processes
  • Ability to interpret structural and thermal analysis results
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills in a cross-functional environment
  • Nice to have: hands-on prototype or product launch experience, battery or energy system background, and experience designing for harsh environments (vibration, corrosion, water ingress, thermal)
