Contract Engineering Manager information

What is a contract engineering manager?

A Contract Engineering Manager is a professional hired on a temporary or project-specific basis to oversee engineering teams and manage technical projects. Unlike permanent managers, contract engineering managers typically work for a set duration or until the completion of a particular project. Their responsibilities include coordinating engineering efforts, ensuring project deadlines are met, managing budgets, and facilitating communication between team members and stakeholders. Companies may hire contract engineering managers to provide specialized expertise or to fill temporary leadership gaps. This role requires strong technical knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to adapt quickly to different work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract engineering manager?

To thrive as a Contract Engineering Manager, you need a solid background in engineering principles, project management, and team leadership, usually backed by a relevant degree and significant industry experience. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Trello), engineering software, and often certifications such as PMP or Agile methodologies are highly valued. Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills help you manage diverse teams and client relationships effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to client specifications in a dynamic contract-based environment.

What are some common challenges faced by a contract engineering manager, and how can they be addressed?

As a Contract Engineering Manager, one common challenge is integrating quickly with existing teams and understanding project context within a limited timeframe. Since contract roles often involve leading established engineering teams on short notice, building trust and aligning on goals efficiently is crucial. Effective communication, setting clear expectations, and leveraging strong project management skills help ensure smooth collaboration. Proactively identifying knowledge gaps and seeking input from team members can also accelerate onboarding and project delivery.

What is the difference between Contract Engineering Manager vs Project Engineer?

AspectContract Engineering ManagerProject Engineer

Work EnvironmentOversees multiple projects, manages contracts, liaises with clients and vendorsFocuses on specific projects, coordinates engineering tasks, reports to project managers
Industry UsageCommon in construction, manufacturing, energy sectorsWidely used across engineering disciplines in various industries

The Contract Engineering Manager typically oversees multiple projects, manages contractual aspects, and liaises with clients, requiring leadership and contractual knowledge. The Project Engineer focuses on executing specific engineering tasks within a project, emphasizing technical skills and project coordination. While both roles require engineering credentials, the Contract Engineering Manager has a broader managerial and contractual scope compared to the more technical and project-specific Project Engineer.

Job description

Career Renew is recruiting for one of its clients an Engineering Manager - this is an onsite role in NY. Salary range: 200-250K USD base plus benefits plus equity.

We are the leading AI-native revenue platform for modern finance and accounting teams. Our agents automate the entire contract-to-cash lifecycle, including billing, collections, revenue recognition, and reporting, to help teams eliminate manual work and accelerate cash flow.

High-growth companies like Cursor and Statsig rely on us to generate invoices directly from contracts, reconcile payments in real time, and automate ASC 606 compliance.

Founded in 2023, we've raised over $91 million from Lightspeed Venture Partners, General Catalyst, and Primary. The team is headquartered in New York and brings deep expertise in finance and AI.

About the Role

We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead a product engineering team building core capabilities of our platform. You will be responsible for people leadership, delivery execution, and technical decision-making, while partnering closely with Product and Design.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building high-performing teams, improving engineering processes, and shipping impactful software in a fast-moving environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead and develop a team of software engineers through coaching, feedback, and career growth

  • Own delivery planning and execution for your team, ensuring predictable and high-quality outcomes

  • Partner with Product and Design to define scope, timelines, and technical approach

  • Guide architectural and technical decisions while maintaining a high quality bar

  • Improve engineering processes, tooling, and team health over time

  • Hire and onboard new engineers as the team scales

Requirements:
7 - 10 years of experience in software engineering, with 3+ years managing engineers of varying seniorities (Mandatory)
Currently or recently (within 1 year) in an Engineering Manager role actively managing engineers (ideally team of 10+ engineers) (Mandatory)
Experience at Series A-Series D startups (e.g. Ramp, Brex, Rippling, or similar fintech/AI-native startups in NYC) (Mandatory)
Background in B2B SaaS product engineering, ideally in fintech, billing, payments, or revenue/accounting workflows
CS degree or equivalent technical background
Strong system design fundamentals (Mandatory)
Familiarity or high level of interest with AI/LLM tooling and modern dev workflows (Nice-to-have)
Why you should join us
  • Backed by top-tier investors with serious momentum. We've raised $92M+ from Lightspeed Venture Partners, General Catalyst, and Primary Ventures — including a $55M Series B in 2025. We're growing fast with ~190 employees and strong customer traction across B2B companies like Cursor and Statsig.
  • Real leadership impact from day one. You'll own people management for a team of 10–15 engineers and report directly to the VP of Engineering. This is a high-visibility role with direct influence on how the engineering org scales.
  • Fast and lean interview process. Two rounds total — a 45-min Zoom with the VP of Engineering followed by a 3-hour on-site. The whole process can wrap up in under two weeks.
  • Competitive comp with equity upside. Base salary up to ~$250K+ for the right candidate plus equity in a Series B company with strong investor backing and real growth trajectory.
  • Excellent benefits package. Up to 100% employer-covered healthcare (medical, dental, vision), unlimited PTO, 12 weeks parental leave, free One Medical membership, daily lunch provided, and tax-free commuter benefits.
