Job description

Description

Executive Summary

This project is to establish NetBox as the single source of truth for network device inventory data and to implement bi-directional synchronization between NetBox and our current internal network inventory database (Oracle). The organization is seeking a single contractor for an anticipated 6-month engagement to support discovery, design, development, testing, documentation, and implementation of this synchronization and data migration effort.

The selected contractor will work collaboratively with an internal team that has other concurrent responsibilities. Strong NetBox expertise, Oracle integration experience, and the ability to work independently and communicate clearly with a technical team are essential.

Additional technical details, data samples, access information, and internal process documentation may be provided under NDA or during a later discovery phase.

Project Purpose:

Establish NetBox as the single source of truth for all network device inventory data by

implementing a bi-directional sync process between NetBox and Oracle (internal network

inventory database), eliminating duplicate data entry across systems.

Project Benefits:

● One authoritative source for all network device inventory data, including devices, circuits,

IPs, VLANs, prefixes, tenants, and related inventory objects.

● Eliminates duplicate data entry between NetBox and Oracle.

● Lays the foundation for future network automation.

● Reduces risk of data inconsistencies across systems.

● Improves visibility and reliability of network device inventory data.

Project Justification:

Currently, network device inventory data exists across multiple systems, including Oracle and NetBox, with no reliable sync between them. This creates duplicate entry, data inconsistencies, and limits the team's ability to automate network management tasks.

Establishing NetBox as the network device inventory single source of truth and syncing it with Oracle will resolve these issues and position the organization for broader automation efforts in the future. The sync with Oracle remains necessary to support legacy systems and existing business processes that still depend on Oracle for asset, financial, operational, or reporting data, allowing the organization to modernize its inventory management.

Desired Project Outcomes:

● NetBox is the established primary source for network device inventory data entry.

● Bi-directional sync between NetBox and Oracle is live and validated.

● Duplicate data entry is eliminated for in-scope inventory data.

● Schema mapping is documented and maintained.

● Development environment is operational and used for testing.

● Foundation is in place for future network automation work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

The anticipated engagement is a 6- to 9-month contract for a single contractor to support discovery, design, development, testing, documentation, and implementation of the NetBox-to-Oracle synchronization and related data migration work.

The selected contractor is expected to deliver a production-ready sync process, validated schema mappings, migration support, documentation, and knowledge transfer within the engagement period. The contractor should expect to work collaboratively with an internal team that has other concurrent responsibilities and should be comfortable working with a degree of autonomy while maintaining clear and regular communication.

The organization is seeking a single contractor to assist with planning, design, development, and implementation of a NetBox-to-Oracle synchronization and data migration effort.

The ideal contractor should have experience with:

● NetBox architecture, data modeling, APIs, and operational best practices.

● Oracle database integration and data extraction.

● ETL/data migration design and implementation.

● Network inventory data models, including devices, interfaces, IPs, VLANs, prefixes, circuits, tenants, and related objects.

● Bi-directional synchronization patterns and conflict handling.

● Python or other integration development languages commonly used with NetBox.

● Data cleansing, validation, and reconciliation.

● Documentation of schema mappings, architecture decisions, and operational procedures.

● Working with network engineering teams and translating operational requirements into technical implementation.

● Working independently and collaboratively within a team that has other concurrent

project responsibilities.
