Job description

Consumers Energy is Michigan's largest energy provider, providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million of the state's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Consumers Energy knows job number one is to keep the lights on for customers. We are committed to delivering reliable, clean, and affordable energy to our customers 24/7.

Location: This position is onsite and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify). 

General Summary of Job Responsibilities

The Supervisor of Welding leads a team of welders with responsibilities for safe and efficient operations of the Gas System (Distribution, Storage, Transmission, Gas Construction). The incumbent will provide direct guidance on escalated items concerning welding operations. Support and lead project teams, while advocating for safety actions, lean initiatives, strategic planning, and emergent situations. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direction and guidance on the Gas System (Distribution, Storage, Transmission) and the Gas Operations Welding Manual policies and procedures including emergency leak response, ruptured/damages gas lines, main maintenance, weld repairs and welding related efforts, standard adherence, etc. May also assist cross-functional team(s) in development and approval of gas procedures, operations manual edits, project designs, and scope approvals. Monitor the adherence to standards and compliance trends across multiple headquarters to ensure compliance
  • Lead, develop, and coach a team of welders to achieve team goals and expectations. Ensure accountability by utilizing tools such as key performance indicators (KPI) and monitoring job performance. Oversee coworker work plans and operational tasks
  • Participate in an on-call rotation providing leadership during after hours, weekends, and Holidays. Help implement emergency response plans as needed within the ICS and assist in completing required regulatory reporting. Participate in scenario-based training and incident action plans for utility emergencies to ensure safety, incident stabilization, and resolution
  • Coach team members on Lean methodologies; integrate visual management, operating reviews, problem solving, standard work development, and waste elimination to improve operational excellence/performance. Support local cross-functional team(s) and coworkers through strategic change initiatives
  • Support construction, compliance, and maintenance projects/activities in assigned area. Ensure team adherence to planned milestones, ensure first time quality performance, and communicate plan changes. Interface with customers, contractors, and other utilities as projects progress. Oversee the delegation of new assignments and supervise special projects as required
  • Ensure welders are supported and completing safety focused tasks. Provide guidance on escalated safety issues, participate/lead safety follow-up activities/Root Cause Analysis (RCA's). Manage safety trend data and utilize problem solving tools to help develop safety plans and countermeasures
  • Coach team members to operate within the guidelines of the union contract. Maintain an effective working relationship with local Union leadership and Labor Relations. Support the contract negotiation process as necessary
  • Support budget monitoring of actual performance versus forecast by reviewing units, hours, and reasonable expectancies (RE)
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Welding, Technical or related field with 2 years in Related Natural Gas System or leadership experience

  • [OR] High School Diploma with 6 years in Related Natural Gas System or leadership experience
