What You Will Do:
The Constructability Engineer will serve as a vital resource for the firm, reviewing project designs and plans to ensure feasibility, efficiency, and compliance with MassDOT standards. This role requires deep expertise in construction methodologies, and MassDOT design standards, specifications, materials and contracts, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, buildable designs.
This role involves conducting comprehensive constructability reviews of project designs to identify potential challenges, inefficiencies, areas of unmitigated risk, or conflicts with construction feasibility. The successful candidate will provide recommendations to optimize designs for cost-effectiveness, ease of construction, and adherence to project schedules. A strong understanding of MassDOT construction standards, specifications, and guidelines is essential. The role also requires experience with the interpretation and administration of construction contracts.
The position requires close coordination with multidisciplinary teams, including roadway engineers, traffic engineers, structural engineers, planners, and environmental professionals. The candidate will serve as a liaison between design teams and construction stakeholders, ensuring that construction-related considerations are clearly communicated and integrated into project development. Active participation in project meetings is expected to provide input on construction impacts and alternatives.
The candidate will support the Construction Services Group during the construction phase by addressing contractor inquiries and providing clarification on design intent. Responsibilities include assisting in the preparation of construction documents—plans, specifications, and estimates—with a focus on clarity and practicality. The candidate will evaluate contractors’ Value Engineering (VE) proposals to ensure alignment with project goals, and will review shop drawings, submittals, change orders, and extra work orders as needed.
This role ensures all designs meet MassDOT requirements and incorporates best practices in constructability. The candidate will monitor emerging MassDOT standards and construction innovations to incorporate them into project workflows. They will also perform quality assurance checks on design deliverables to identify and mitigate constructability risks.
The candidate will lead and participate in VE reviews of complex internal and external projects, including those for MassDOT. Responsibilities include leading VE teams, preparing presentations, performing field visits to familiarize teams with projects, and writing VE reports in accordance with FHWA definitions and policies. The candidate will also review VE recommendations, facilitate discussions, and implement accepted changes into the project design.
This role includes identifying, analyzing, and addressing potential risks across complex projects. The candidate will develop and maintain project risk registers, lead risk allocation workshops, and assess the probability and impact of identified risks. They will implement risk mitigation and transfer strategies, continuously monitor risks and management efforts, and adjust strategies as needed. Special focus is given to managing risks during the early development phase through construction and financial close.
The candidate will provide training and mentorship to internal staff on constructability principles and MassDOT standards. They will also share lessons learned from previous projects to foster continuous improvement in the firm’s design practices.
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • 15+ years of experience in construction, constructability review, or infrastructure project management, with significant exposure to MassDOT projects.
  • 5-10 years of experience designing MassDOT or similar DOT/public works projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in good standing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts within 6 months of hire.
  • In-depth understanding of MassDOT construction standards, processes, and specifications.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, sequencing, and equipment.
  • Proficiency with design and project management tools, including AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and scheduling software.
  • Experience working with multidisciplinary design teams in a consulting and/or construction environment.
  • Familiarity with risk management, VE, and alternative delivery methods (e.g., design-build).
  • Experience identifying and mitigating construction project risk.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
What HSH Offers:
  • Flexible, hybrid workplace
  • Engaged, friendly workplace culture with many opportunities to connect meaningfully with colleagues
  • Transit subsidy and discounted bike share membership
  • 401(k) Plan with generous company match
  • Paid volunteer time
