What is a construction accountant bookkeeper?

A Construction Accountant Bookkeeper is a specialized financial professional who manages and records the financial transactions of construction companies or projects. They handle tasks such as job costing, tracking project expenses, managing accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and preparing financial statements. Their expertise ensures that construction projects stay on budget and comply with industry-specific regulations, such as lien waivers and retention. They often collaborate closely with project managers, contractors, and suppliers to keep financial records accurate and up-to-date.

What are some unique challenges a construction accountant bookkeeper might face compared to accountants in other industries?

A Construction Accountant Bookkeeper often manages complex project-based accounting, including tracking multiple jobs, handling change orders, and managing costs for materials and subcontractors. Unlike standard bookkeeping, this role requires a strong understanding of job costing, progress billing, and retention tracking, which are critical to the construction industry. Attention to detail is essential, as errors can impact project profitability and client relationships. Additionally, collaboration with project managers and site supervisors is frequent, ensuring financial accuracy and supporting decision-making throughout each project's lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a construction accountant bookkeeper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Construction Accountant Bookkeeper, you need a solid understanding of accounting principles, construction cost management, and experience with financial reporting, usually supported by a degree in accounting or finance. Familiarity with construction-specific accounting software such as Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate or QuickBooks, as well as proficiency in Excel, is often required. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication help manage multiple projects and collaborate with project managers and vendors. These skills are essential for accurate job costing, timely billing, and maintaining the financial health of construction projects.

Job description

Rushmore Construction Group

Staff Accountant/Bookkeeper - Construction

Location: Oakhurst, NJ | In-Office

Build the Financial Backbone of a Growing Company.

Rushmore Construction Group is a growing custom luxury home builder serving Monmouth County, New Jersey. Alongside our construction business, our affiliated entities include rental properties and other partner-owned ventures. As the company continues to grow and professionalize its operations, we're bringing key financial functions in-house and building systems designed to support the next stage of the business.

We're looking for an experienced Staff Accountant/Bookkeeper to take ownership of day-to-day bookkeeping, cash management, financial reporting, and select tax-related responsibilities across multiple entities. This is a newly created position; not a seat in a large, established accounting department. You'll initially work alongside our current outside accounting provider to understand the existing chart of accounts, cost-code structure, and WIP methodology before progressively taking ownership of the function internally. The right person will enjoy creating structure, improving processes, solving problems independently, and working directly with company ownership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Enter, classify, and code receipts, bills, invoices, and transactions across Buildertrend, QuickBooks Online, and DoorLoop.
  • Maintain accurate job and cost-code accounting across construction projects, rental properties, and affiliated entities.
  • Perform full-cycle bookkeeping, including general ledger maintenance and bank and credit card reconciliations.
  • Create and issue customer invoices and vendor bills.
  • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable from start to finish.
  • Maintain aging schedules and follow up on outstanding receivables and payables.
  • Process bill payments and accurately record cash inflows and outflows.
  • Monitor cash positions across multiple entities and proactively flag potential issues.
  • Prepare recurring financial reporting and monthly financial statements.
  • Taking charge of WIP, percentage-of-completion, and job-cost accounting.
  • Prepare and file simpler recurring tax returns, including applicable quarterly, sales/use tax, and investment-property filings.
  • Organize year-end books, schedules, and supporting documentation for outside tax accountants.
  • Research applicable tax credits, deductions, and planning opportunities for discussion with the company's outside tax advisors.
  • Help design, document, and improve accounting workflows as the function transitions in-house.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of bookkeeping or accounting experience in construction, real estate, trades, or a closely related industry.
  • CPA license is strongly preferred but not required. Candidates with comparable construction accounting experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Hands-on proficiency with QuickBooks Online.
  • Experience managing accounting for multiple entities or properties.
  • Working knowledge of WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and/or construction job costing.
  • Ability to independently prepare bank reconciliations, A/P and A/R aging reports, and monthly financial statements.
  • Comfortable preparing or assisting with quarterly and straightforward annual tax filings.
  • Willingness to proactively research tax credits, deductions, and planning opportunities.
  • Strong Excel and spreadsheet skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and deadline-driven follow-through.
  • Buildertrend, DoorLoop, or similar platform experience is a significant plus.
  • Experience establishing accounting processes or transitioning an accounting function from outsourced to in-house is highly valued.
  • Comfortable working in a growing entrepreneurial company where responsibilities evolve as the business expands.

Pay & Benefits

  • Full-Time, W-2 employment
  • Pay: $65,000 - $70,000 base salary, commensurate with experience.
  • Annual performance bonus opportunity of up to 15% of base salary based on goal achievement and overall performance.
  • Company-paid continuing professional education (CPE) hours.
  • CPA license renewal covered by the company.
  • Professional association dues covered by the company.
  • Defined opportunity for growth as the scope and ownership of the position expand.
  • In-office position with direct access to company partners.
  • Schedule: Monday-Friday, standard business hours.

Why Rushmore Construction Group?

This is an opportunity to build something rather than simply inherit someone else's accounting process. You'll have direct access to ownership, visibility across several businesses, and the ability to create systems that have an immediate impact on how the company operates. As Rushmore continues to grow, the scope and responsibility of this position can grow with it. If you enjoy ownership, autonomy, problem-solving, and being an important part of a small entrepreneurial team, this role offers the chance to make your mark.

Rushmore Construction Group is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We consider qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic.
