Job Summary:

Conflicts Counsel is responsible for management of the Conflicts Department. In addition, Conflicts Counsel provides legal advice to attorneys regarding conflicts issues that come up prior to work starting. The Conflicts Counsel reports to the Deputy General Counsel and refers conflict issues that come up during the course of a matter to the General, Deputy, or Associate in the OGC.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise members of the Conflicts team.Manage scheduling and team workload.
  • Approve time off requests and coordinate coverage for holidays and office closures.
  • Conduct annual reviews for team members and facilitate mentorship and growth in careers
  • Manage full hiring and termination process with HR team.

- Train/onboard new members of the Conflicts team.

  • Create and update training materials for conflicts' role in the intake and lateral hire processes.
  • Maintain and update policies for Firm, Intapp Open, Intapp Walls and Conflicts/NBI changes.
  • Counsels Conflicts and NBI Specialists on questions related to conflicts issues and parties in conflict checks.
  • Counsels attorneys with respect to conflicts issues that arise at the new business intake level as well as lateral hire projects.
  • Subject Matter Expert for Business Services representation of Conflicts in various firm projects and initiatives.
  • Participate in all aspects of conflict inquiries regarding new business intake and lateral attorneys/paralegals/statisticians.
  • Update conflicts database (Blackbook) with Outside Counsel Guidelines and other conflict warnings.
  • Prepare and analyze conflict reports for special projects outside of New Business Intake (RFPs, Bankruptcies, Acquisitions).
  • Maintain database integrity in Intapp Open - update incorrect information, match up changes from matter moves and act as Administrator in the system.
  • Oversight of the Conflicts Department (maintain InsideJL intranet page, create/edit/update policies, main point of contact).
  • Manage Ethical Walls (including security walls as requested in Outside Counsel Guidelines).
  • Research business conflict and legal conflict issues, and identify ways to improve when conflicts are missed.

Skill Requirements:

  • 5 years of law firm Conflicts experience preferred
  • Knowledge of law firm departments and operations
  • Proficient in use of Conflicts database, search engines, Excel, MS Office
  • Legal research skills and conflict search skills required
  • Comfot with leading a team and making decisions
  • Intapp Open experience preferred
  • Proactive, problem-solving, critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work in fast-paced environment, interacting professionally with others
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Dedicated to excellent customer service

Educational Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school

For Colorado, Washington, California, Illinois and New York, the expected salary range for this position is between $175,000 and$190,000. This position is also eligible for annual bonuses. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
