What are concessions jobs?

Concessions jobs involve selling food, beverages, and sometimes merchandise at venues like stadiums, theaters, amusement parks, or events. Workers in concessions are responsible for preparing and serving items, handling cash or card payments, and maintaining cleanliness at their stations. These roles often require strong customer service skills and the ability to work efficiently in fast-paced environments. Concessions jobs can be seasonal or part-time and are popular among students and those seeking flexible work hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Concessions Worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Concessions Worker, you need basic math skills, customer service abilities, and familiarity with food handling, often supported by a food safety certification. Experience with point-of-sale (POS) systems and inventory management tools is typically required. Strong communication, teamwork, and the ability to stay calm in busy environments are essential soft skills. These qualifications ensure efficient service, customer satisfaction, and adherence to health and safety standards in fast-paced concession settings.

What is the difference between Concessions vs Food Service Worker?

Concessions roles focus on selling food at events and outdoor venues, often requiring minimal certifications. Food Service Workers operate in restaurants or cafeterias, with more emphasis on food preparation and customer service. While both involve food handling, their work environments and job duties differ significantly.

What are some common challenges faced by concessions workers during large events, and how can they be managed effectively?

Concessions workers often encounter challenges such as long lines, high-pressure peak periods, and ensuring accurate cash handling during large events. Managing these challenges effectively typically involves strong teamwork, clear communication, and staying organized under pressure. Many teams use point-of-sale systems and pre-event briefings to streamline operations, while cross-training staff allows for flexibility in busy moments. Remaining calm and courteous with customers is also crucial to maintaining a positive experience for everyone involved.

Looking for a summer job that keeps you in the center of the excitement? Whether you're handing out tenderloins at a rodeo or serving snacks before a concert, you can earn money, have fun, and be part of two of the Iowa State Fair's biggest attractions.

As a Seasonal Cashier or Concessions Crew Member with Campbell's Concessions, you may work at the Iowa State Fair Grandstands, Elwell Family Park, or both. These are high-energy, fast-paced venues that host major concerts, motorsports, rodeos, and live entertainment throughout the fair.

Many of our employees return year after year, helping create a fun, supportive, and experienced team environment.
