Food Services Assistant

10-Month, Full-Time, Non-exempt Position

Position Description:

The Food Services Assistant supports the efficient daily operation of Elijah House Academy's breakfast and lunch program. This role ensures compliance with USDA and VDOE guidelines, maintains high standards of sanitation, safety, and food quality, and contributes to a war, welcoming dining experience for students. The Food Services Assistant is responsible for most day-to-day kitchen operations.

Position Reporting Responsibility:

This position reports directly to the Food Services Director.

Qualifications:

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Must have or obtain "serveSafe" or equivalent in food safety certification.
  • Minimum six months of experience in food preparation and/or school cafeteria service preferred.
  • General understanding of computer programs or POS systems.

Requirements:

  • Be in agreement with the EHA statement of faith, philosophy of education and its core values.
  • A heart for serving at-risk youth of our city.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students, and school staff.
  • Professional appearance and conduct consistent with serving as a role model for children.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. periodically, carry up to 20 lbs. frequently.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and work briefly in refrigerated and freezer environments.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in using standardized and specialized kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, using sound decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet multiple preparation deadlines.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Reliable daily attendance and adherence to assigned schedule.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Wear required PPE and hair restraints during all shifts.
  • Maintain excellent personal hygiene, including clean clothing and frequent hand washing.
  • Prepare and serve breakfast and lunch daily.
  • Assist the Food Services Director with menu planning and ordering.
  • Make appropriate menu substitutions when necessary.
  • Complete daily production records in accordance with USDA requirements.
  • Ensure all menu items and ingredients are available when needed.
  • Follow standardized recipes and check food quality (taste, appearance, temperature).
  • Ensure food is ready at service time.
  • Perform general kitchen duties, including cleaning work areas, cookware, utensils, and dishes.
  • Maintain positive rapport with teachers and school personnel.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Accommodate students' documented allergy needs.
  • Arrive on time every day and demonstrate consistent professionalism.
  • Adhere to all kitchen policies and Elijah House Academy's Code of Conduct.
