Job description

Description:Job Summary

The Mainframe Computer Operator is responsible for monitoring and operating enterprise mainframe systems and related peripherals to support daily production workloads. This role provides first-line operational support, responds to service requests and incidents, communicates status to customers and internal teams, and ensures accurate, timely execution of scheduled processing. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, dependable, and demonstrates strong customer service and communication skills.


Key Responsibilities

· Monitor mainframe consoles, system logs, and job schedulers to ensure successful completion of daily/weekly/monthly processing.

· Start, stop, and control batch processing and online environments per established procedures and run books.

· Respond to alerts, job halts/failures, and system messages; perform basic troubleshooting and corrective actions within defined authority.

· Provide timely status updates to customers and stakeholders, including impact, ETA, and next steps; maintain a professional, service-oriented approach.

· Execute scheduled operational tasks such as backup coordination, file transfers, report distribution, print operations, tape/virtual tape handling, and start-of-day/end-of-day processing as applicable.

· Maintain accurate shift logs and handoff notes; communicate priorities and outstanding issues during shift transitions.

· Verify processing results, reconcile counts, and perform quality checks to ensure accuracy and completeness.

· Identify recurring issues and recommend process improvements; assist with updating run books, checklists, and knowledge articles.

Requirements:Required Qualifications

· High school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training or coursework is a plus.

· Experience working in an IT operation’s, help desk, NOC, data center, or similar production-support environment.

· Working experience in a print production environment.

· Strong customer service mindset with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with technical and non-technical customers.

· Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to follow procedures precisely.

· Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, remain calm under pressure, and respond effectively to time-sensitive incidents.

· Basic understanding of computer systems, operating concepts, and job scheduling/production processing.

· Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a shift-based operations team.


Preferred Qualifications

· Hands-on exposure to mainframe environments (e.g., IBM z/OS) and common operator tasks.

· Basic knowledge of batch job flow concepts, and interpreting job output/messages.

· Experience with ticketing systems and ITIL-based incident/problem/change processes.

· Experience maintaining run books, checklists, and shift handoff documentation.
