As of Jun 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for computational sustainability in the United States is $103,684.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $91,500.00 and $112,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is computational sustainability?

Computational sustainability is a field that applies computer science, data analysis, and modeling techniques to address environmental and societal challenges, such as resource management and conservation. Professionals in this area develop algorithms and tools to optimize sustainable practices and inform policy decisions. Skills in programming, data science, and environmental science are often essential for roles in this field.

What are the typical challenges faced by professionals working in Computational Sustainability?

Professionals in Computational Sustainability often encounter the challenge of balancing complex environmental, social, and economic factors while developing practical computational models. Datasets can be incomplete or highly variable, requiring creative solutions and advanced analytics to generate actionable insights. Collaboration with experts in fields such as ecology, urban planning, or policy is common, making cross-disciplinary communication skills essential. Adapting to rapidly evolving technologies and staying updated with the latest research can also be demanding, but offers valuable opportunities for impactful work and career advancement.

Do computational biologists get paid well?

Computational biologists typically earn competitive salaries that reflect their specialized skills in data analysis, programming, and biological sciences. Salaries vary based on experience, education, and location, but they are generally above average compared to many other scientific roles, especially in research institutions and industry sectors like biotech and pharmaceuticals.

What jobs will be left by 2030?

Computational sustainability jobs, such as data analysts, environmental modelers, and systems engineers, are expected to grow as technology advances and sustainability becomes a priority. Roles involving skills in data science, machine learning, and environmental modeling will remain in demand, while some manual or less specialized positions may decline due to automation. Continuous learning and proficiency with relevant tools like programming languages and environmental data platforms will be important for future job security.

What is the highest paying job in sustainability?

In sustainability, senior roles such as Sustainability Director or Chief Sustainability Officer tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding $150,000 annually. These positions require extensive experience, strategic leadership skills, and knowledge of environmental policies and reporting standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Computational Sustainability position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Computational Sustainability, you'll need a strong background in computer science, mathematics, and environmental science, typically evidenced by an advanced degree in a related field. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or R), optimization tools, machine learning frameworks, and geospatial analysis systems is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication set top candidates apart, as much of the work is interdisciplinary. These competencies are crucial for designing data-driven solutions to real-world environmental and sustainability challenges.

What is a Computational Sustainability job?

A Computational Sustainability job involves using computational methods, such as AI, machine learning, and optimization, to tackle environmental and societal challenges. Professionals in this field work on problems like wildlife conservation, energy efficiency, climate modeling, and sustainable resource management. They often collaborate with ecologists, policymakers, and engineers to develop solutions that balance environmental and economic considerations. This interdisciplinary role requires expertise in computer science, data analysis, and domain-specific knowledge related to sustainability.

Job description

About Thea Energy:

Thea Energy is leveraging recent breakthroughs in stellarator physics and engineering to create a faster and simpler approach to commercializing fusion energy. The company is reinventing the stellarator using computer-controlled arrays of planar coils thereby replacing the intricate, complex modular magnets required in all other stellarator architectures. Thea Energy is on a mission to create a limitless source of zero emission energy for a sustainable future.

Position Overview:

We are seeking highly motivated Computational Plasma Physicists to join our team, focusing on stellarator and fusion plasma physics simulations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in computational physics, with a particular emphasis on MHD stability in stellarators and stellarator optimization. You will work with minimal supervision, contributing to cutting-edge research and development in Thea Energy’s stellarator systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement algorithms for analyzing and improving stellarator configurations.
  • Conduct simulations and analysis of fusion plasma behavior in stellarators, using advanced computational models.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to refine designs and improve the performance of stellarator systems.
  • Perform data analysis, model validation, and provide insights into the physical mechanisms governing plasma behavior.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications based on simulation results and optimization findings.
Required Experience & Skillsets:

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Plasma Physics, Computational Physics, Applied Physics, or a related field, or master’s degree in relevant field with 2+ years of experience.
  • Strong knowledge of computational plasma physics and numerical simulations.
  • Experience with stellarators is a plus.
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in scientific computing (e.g., Python, Fortran, C++, or MATLAB).
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with any of the stellarator design, stability or transport codes such as DESC, STELLOPT, VMEC, TERPSICHORE, M3DC-1, GX, GENE-3D.
  • Understanding of optimized stellarator magnetic field generation and coil optimization techniques.
  • Experience in high-performance computing (HPC) environments.

Personal Attributes:

  • Ability to work independently and manage projects with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and a passion for advancing the field of fusion energy research.
  • Willingness to collaborate with a diverse team of scientists and engineers within the company and externally.
Company Benefits:
  • Salary range $120,000 - $140,000
  • Comprehensive health benefits (e.g. medical/dental/vision)
  • Employee equity stock options
  • 20 days PTO
