In the oil & gas industry, the job of a completions engineer is to finish a well assembly after the completion of the drilling and lining. Your duties in this career are to monitor the well, identify any structural or geologic issues that might complicate the completion process, and draw up plans to install the rest of the equipment to facilitate the pumping of oil. You analyze, test, and record various features of the well, such as pressure and temperature, and design the proper system to deal with the specific conditions of different wells. Completions engineers work in both on- and off-shore drilling.
| Aspect | Completions Engineer | Drilling Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Bachelor's in Petroleum Engineering or related field; often required certifications | Bachelor's in Petroleum Engineering or related field; similar certifications |
| Work Environment | Field and office; focuses on well completion and production optimization | Field and office; focuses on well drilling operations and planning |
| Industry Usage | Commonly employed in oil and gas companies during well completion phases |
The Completions Engineer and Drilling Engineer roles share similar educational backgrounds and work environments, but they focus on different phases of well development. The Completions Engineer specializes in preparing wells for production, while the Drilling Engineer manages the drilling process. Both roles are essential in the oil and gas industry and often collaborate during well construction projects.

Description
Fervo is working to build the most cost-effective, repeatable geothermal power plants in the world. Delivering on this mission requires first-of-a-kind well designs, disciplined execution in the field, and continuous learning across the full well lifecycle. Joining Fervo's Operations organization means operating where subsurface innovation meets real-world execution, with safety, reliability, and capital efficiency as non-negotiables.
We are seeking a Completions Engineer who is excited by Fervo's mission and motivated to design and execute advanced geothermal completions and well interventions in a highly dynamic environment. This role is ideal for an engineer with strong field instincts, deep completions or intervention experience, and the ability to operate effectively where standard oil and gas playbooks must be adapted - or reinvented - for geothermal applications.
Description
The Completions Engineer is responsible for the technical design, planning, and execution of Fervo's geothermal well completions and workover activities, spanning initial stimulation through ongoing intervention and optimization. This role is central to translating subsurface objectives into safe, repeatable, and cost-effective field operations and plays a key role in scaling Fervo's development model from pilot projects to commercial deployment.
Working closely with subsurface, drilling, production, and facilities teams, the Completions Engineer provides hands-on technical leadership during both planning and execution phases. Success in this role requires comfort operating in high-ambiguity, execution-heavy environments, frequent field engagement, and a strong bias toward learning-driven iteration and operational excellence.Â
Requirements
Responsibilities
Completions & Workover Engineering Execution
Lead the technical design, planning, and execution of geothermal well completions, stimulations, and workover/intervention operations.
Develop detailed, step-by-step operational procedures to safely achieve well objectives in compliance with regulatory and internal HSE requirements.
Provide hands-on field engineering support during active operations and serve as the primary point of contact for completion and intervention-related issues.
Support execution across the full well lifecycle, including initial completions, stimulation, recompletions, remedial work, and well interventions.
Well Design Optimization & Subsurface Integration
Partner with subsurface and reservoir engineering teams to optimize completion architecture, stimulation designs, and operational parameters.
Utilize ResFrac or other industry-leading simulators to evaluate fracture behavior, completion efficiency, and well performance.
Support cross-functional well planning and field development optimization efforts across drilling, production, and facilities teams.
Translate subsurface objectives into executable field designs that balance performance, risk, and cost.
Planning, Cost Estimation & Regulatory Support
Develop completion and workover cost estimates ranging from early scoping estimates to detailed AFE-level and probabilistic estimates.
Support well planning and operational scheduling activities in coordination with cross-functional teams.
Compile technical and operational data required for permitting, regulatory filings, and internal approvals.
Support preparation of technical documentation for internal and external reviews.
Operational Learning, Risk Management & Field Engagement
Apply risk assessment, hazard analysis, and Management of Change (MOC) processes to planned and active operations.
Lead post-job reviews and after-action analyses to capture lessons learned and identify best practices.
Drive continuous improvement by incorporating operational learnings into future designs, procedures, and standards.
Travel frequently to field locations to oversee operations and maintain close collaboration with field personnel.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in unconventional completions, well interventions, or workover operations.
Experience with multiple well completion or intervention technologies.
Strong understanding of tools and methods used to evaluate completion efficiency and optimize well performance.
Proficiency with stimulation and completion modeling software (e.g., ResFrac, Kinetix, or similar).
Demonstrated experience applying risk assessment processes, hazard analysis, and Management of Change (MOC).
Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, execution-heavy environments with shifting priorities.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and written and verbal communication skills.
Willingness to travel approximately 25-30% to field locations.
Preferred
Hands-on field experience across drilling, completions, and/or workover operations.
Experience with casing and tubing stress analysis, including thermal and mechanical loads during stimulation and injection/production.
Experience mentoring or supporting early-career engineers.
Experience working on first-of-a-kind, non-standard, or technically complex well designs.
Success Profile
The engineer who thrives in this role will:
Bring a field-first mindset - comfortable at the wellsite, hands-on during active operations, and energized by frequent field engagement.
Thrive in ambiguity, adapting - or reinventing - standard oil & gas completion playbooks for first-of-a-kind geothermal applications.
Treat safety and reliability as non-negotiable, applying rigorous risk assessment, hazard analysis, and MOC discipline to every operation.
Operate with a learning-driven mindset, turning lessons from each job into better designs, procedures, and standards.
Collaborate seamlessly across subsurface, drilling, production, and facilities teams to translate subsurface objectives into executable field designs.
Take end-to-end ownership of outcomes, balancing well performance against risk, capital efficiency, and schedule.
Communicate clearly and influence decisions with data, sound technical judgment, and a bias toward action.
Location
Fervo Energy is headquartered in Houston, TX. This position is based in Houston, with frequent travel (approximately 25-30%) to field locations to oversee operations and collaborate with field personnel.
