About the Job
General Summary of Position
Manages the overall operations and administrative functions of the laboratory, providing leadership, direction, and support to all laboratory associates to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. Provides general oversight and coordination of laboratory activities, ensuring alignment across technical operations, quality, and accreditation functions. Partners closely with Technical Specialists, who maintain primary ownership of technical operations, validation, instrumentation, and competency, and with Quality and Accreditation leadership, who maintain primary ownership of quality systems, regulatory compliance, and inspection readiness. Supports integration and execution of laboratory priorities by facilitating communication, removing operational barriers, and ensuring consistency in practice across all sections. Assists the Director with financial management, including resource planning, staffing optimization, and cost stewardship. Ensures that appropriate processes are in place to support quality assurance programs, competency assessments, clinical protocols, and standards of patient care while holding leaders accountable for execution within their respective domains. Maintains awareness of inspection readiness and supports a culture of continuous regulatory compliance. Collaborates with the Medical Director on clinical and technical matters, including policies and procedures, and follows guidance from the Administrative Laboratory Director on administrative, operational, and personnel matters within the department.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Reviews operational and performance data to support decision-making and continuous improvement. Collaborates with Technical Specialists and subject matter experts on the evaluation of new products, instrumentation, methodologies, and implementation planning.
  • Communicates with medical staff and other health care providers on matters relating to sectional services.
  • Provides oversight and support for departmental programs (e.g., Safety, Performance Improvement, Quality, Accreditation). Partners with designated content experts who maintain operational ownership of assigned programs and supports implementation of new initiatives.
  • Counsels associates effectively and collaborates with the Administrative Director and Human Resources to utilize the coaching/counseling process.
  • Ensures appropriate documentation systems, records management, reporting, and operational tracking processes are maintained. Delegates responsibilities to technical experts and designated content specialists, as appropriate, while maintaining overall accountability.
  • Manages operational activities across the clinical laboratory, ensuring alignment of staffing, workflow, quality, and service expectations while providing leadership oversight of technical, quality, and regulatory priorities to support operational effectiveness, performance, and accountability.
  • Manages procurement activities, including vendor selection, purchasing, receiving, storage, and utilization of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required.
  • Leads and participates in multidisciplinary quality, patient safety, and service improvement initiatives to enhance operational performance and patient care outcomes.
  • Performs clinical testing on patients/specimens as needed.
  • Recommends the sectional operating budget and ensures that each section operates within budget.
  • Selects, trains, orients, and assigns laboratory personnel to support operational and service needs. Establishes performance expectations, provides ongoing coaching and feedback, and ensures timely performance evaluations that accurately reflect individual contributions and achievement of performance standards. Maintains ongoing communication with laboratory leaders to review programs, discuss operational priorities and new developments, exchange information, and promote collaboration and continuous improvement. Demonstrates and fosters strong customer service and professional relationships in alignment with organizational goals, service standards, and patient care expectations.
  • Provides leadership oversight for quality assurance programs, technical competency assessment processes, clinical protocols, standards of care, and survey readiness to ensure regulatory compliance, operational effectiveness, and high-quality patient care.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or a closely related field, required.

Experience
  • 3-4 years of clinical laboratory experience in the core lab, point of care, or blood bank, required.
  • 1-2 years of supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills.

Licenses and Certifications
  • ASCP - Medical Laboratory Scientist certification, highly preferred.

This position has a hiring range of
USD $89,065.00 - USD $162,801.00 /Yr.
