Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Community Garden Student Worker serves as a hands-on garden maintenance worker and assistant under the supervision of the Community Developer: Garden Coordinator. This position helps to ensure that Asbury Seminary's community garden is well cared for and inviting for community members and visitors and also helps to assist with garden events and seasonal needs. Ultimately, this individual supports the growth and development of our seminary community in the garden.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Garden Tidiness and Presentability
    • Mow and trim the grass in the garden regularly
    • Weed the garden paths and shared beds regularly
    • Gather the trash from the garden trash bins weekly or when full
    • Pick up any tools or trash left laying in the garden
    • Alert the garden coordinator when the garden fire pit is in need of firewood
    • Assist with spreading mulch or compost as needed
  2. Garden Efficiency
    • Water the greenhouse beds, fruit trees, and any communal plots as needed
    • Open and close the greenhouse in order to help maintain adequate temperatures for the plants and to protect against pests
    • Weed the greenhouse beds regularly
    • Assist with the planting, trimming, and harvesting of the greenhouse plants
    • Help to mix the compost pile every 1-3 weeks
    • Assist with any other garden tasks or projects as needed
  3. Community Assistance
    • Help the garden coordinator in setting up for, hosting, and cleaning up after garden events as able, including the on-campus garden produce stand
    • Serve as a point person for gardeners when garden coordinator is away and help with answering questions or providing assistance as needed

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  1. A current student of Asbury Theological Seminary
  2. Able and willing to work 8-10 hours weekly
  3. Willing to work outdoors in the heat of summer and the cold of winter
  4. Able to occasionally push or carry heavy loads
  5. Committed to the mission statements of Asbury Seminary and the community garden

PREFERRED

  1. Experience in farming or gardening
  2. A passion to care for God's creation
  3. Flexibility of schedule and approach
