How much do communication signals intelligence jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for communication signals intelligence in the United States is $104,643.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $94,000.00 and $118,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a communication signals intelligence analyst?

To thrive as a Communication Signals Intelligence Analyst, you need expertise in signal analysis, cryptography, and telecommunications, typically supported by a degree in a technical field or military training. Familiarity with tools such as spectrum analyzers, signal processing software, and intelligence databases, as well as relevant security clearances, is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for interpreting complex data and collaborating on intelligence operations. These skills are vital for accurately identifying, assessing, and reporting on potential threats to national security.

What is the difference between Communication Signals Intelligence vs Signals Analyst?

AspectCommunication Signals IntelligenceSignals Analyst
Required CredentialsSecurity clearances, military or government certificationsDegree in communications, electronics, or related fields
Work EnvironmentIntelligence agencies, military operations, secure facilitiesGovernment agencies, defense contractors, intelligence units
Employer & IndustryPrimarily government, military, national securityGovernment, defense, intelligence sectors

Communication Signals Intelligence involves intercepting and analyzing foreign communications for national security, often requiring security clearances. Signals Analysts focus on analyzing electronic signals, including communications, within various environments. While both roles work in intelligence and defense sectors, Communication Signals Intelligence is more specialized in intercepting foreign communications, whereas Signals Analysts may work on broader electronic signals analysis.

What is communication signals intelligence?

Communication Signals Intelligence, often abbreviated as COMINT, refers to the collection and analysis of electronic signals and communications transmitted by foreign entities. This intelligence discipline focuses on intercepting, decoding, and interpreting messages sent via radio, telephone, satellite, and other communication networks. Professionals in this field play a crucial role in national security by providing insights into potential threats, monitoring adversarial communications, and supporting military operations. The work involves advanced technology and strict compliance with legal and ethical standards.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in a communication signals intelligence role, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Communication Signals Intelligence (COMINT) often face challenges such as rapidly evolving communication technologies and high volumes of encrypted or obfuscated data. Staying updated with the latest interception tools and continually developing analytical skills are essential to remain effective. Collaboration with technical experts and linguists within multidisciplinary teams also helps address complex signals and language barriers. Proactive training, strong attention to detail, and adaptability are key to overcoming these challenges and excelling in the role.
