Position Summary
**WE ARE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION FROM ALL STUDENTS REGARDLESS OF WORK STUDY AWARD**
The Department of Geography and Environmental Studies (GES) and its Center for Community Geography (CCG) seek an Undergraduate Communications Assistant to support outreach and communications across both units. The student will help develop and maintain social media content, assist with website updates, and support the design of newsletters, flyers, and event materials that communicate GES and CCG's teaching, research, and community-engaged work to students, campus partners, and the broader community.
Responsibilities include:
• Draft and schedule regular posts for GES and CCG social media accounts (Instagram, and other platforms as adopted), highlighting events, student and faculty research, and community partnerships.
• Assist with maintaining and updating content on the GES and CCG websites, including event listings, news items, and personnel/affiliate pages.
• Help design flyers, newsletters, and other outreach materials using Canva or similar tools.
• Photograph and/or record short video at department and Center events for use in outreach materials.
• Assist with developing and implementing a broader communications strategy for the Department and Center, including tracking engagement and suggesting improvements.
• Coordinate with GES faculty, CCG staff and affiliates, and graduate/undergraduate students to gather content and ensure accurate, timely posts.
• Attend regular team check-in meetings (in person or via Zoom) and monitor/respond to a shared communications email on a consistent basis.
• Maintain a content calendar and keep track of upcoming deadlines for posts and materials.

Minimum qualifications:
• Currently enrolled UNM undergraduate student in good academic standing.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to attend regular scheduled meetings in person and via Zoom.
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
• Working knowledge of common social media platforms (Instagram, etc.).
• Excellent attention to detail and reliability in meeting deadlines.
• Access to a computer and reliable internet.
Preferred qualifications:
• Work-study preferred, but not required.
• Coursework or experience in Geography, Environmental Studies, Communications, Journalism, or a related field.
• Experience with website content management systems.
• Experience with Canva or other graphic design tools.
• Photography or basic video editing experience.
• Interest in community-engaged research, environmental issues, or science communication.
