What is the difference between Commission Only vs Sales Associate?

Commission Only roles focus solely on sales performance for income, often in independent settings. Sales Associate positions usually combine a base salary with commissions, working in retail or customer service environments. Understanding these differences helps job seekers choose roles aligned with their skills and preferences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a commission-only sales role, and why are they important?

To succeed in a commission-only sales position, you need a solid grasp of sales techniques, product knowledge, and goal-setting, often demonstrated through prior sales experience or relevant training. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) systems, sales analytics tools, and sometimes industry-specific certifications can be vital. Standout professionals possess resilience, self-motivation, persuasive communication, and the ability to quickly build rapport with clients. These skills are crucial because commission-only roles require individuals to consistently generate results and income without a guaranteed base salary, relying entirely on their performance.

What are some common challenges faced in a commission-only sales role, and how can I prepare for them?

One of the main challenges in a commission-only sales position is the variability of income, since your earnings depend entirely on your sales performance. This can create pressure to consistently generate leads and close deals, requiring strong self-motivation and resilience. Additionally, you may need to manage your schedule and pipeline independently, as many commission-only roles offer a high level of autonomy. To prepare, develop strong time-management skills, build a reliable prospecting strategy, and create a financial plan to manage periods of lower income. Networking with peers and seeking mentorship can also provide valuable support and insights.

What are commission only jobs?

Commission only jobs are positions where employees or contractors are paid solely based on the sales or deals they close, rather than receiving a regular salary or hourly wage. In these roles, your earnings depend entirely on your performance and ability to generate revenue for the company. This pay structure can offer high earning potential for motivated individuals, but also involves financial risk since there is no guaranteed income. Commission only jobs are common in industries like real estate, insurance, and sales. It's important to understand the compensation structure and evaluate your risk tolerance before accepting a commission only position.

Our client, a highly respected fee-only portfolio management and fiduciary firm with over $200 billion in assets under management, is looking for qualified financial professionals to join their firm as a Regional Vice President of Sales. As a Regional Vice President of Sales, you will be in a lucrative 100% sales-focused role without having to focus on service requirementsโ€”you will be provided qualified lead flow to eliminate cold calling, to put our clientโ€™s high-net-worth clientele first.

ABOUT THE ROLE

  • Manage your business remotely from home to cover a local territory within driving distance, to present our clientโ€™s wealth management solutions to high-net-worth prospectsโ€”you will be provided an expense account by our client, with all home office and travel expenses covered, which includes a computer, phone, scanner, printer, and any other essential expenses needed
  • Call and close qualified leads of high-net-worth prospects that have expressed interest in investing with our client, who have assets of $500k or more to invest
  • Meet with prospects to evaluate their personal situation and provide solutions, as well as educate prospective clients on the firmโ€™s services
  • Assist qualified consumers to become the firmโ€™s clientsโ€”you will be supported by an internal dedicated portfolio management and service team in-office, comprised of sales support, client service, and marketing team, which actively markets their services via direct mail, internet, television advertisements, and other mediums to receive pre-qualified responses from interested investors who want to discuss moving over their investment portfolios
  • Report to the Director of Private Client Group Sales, who will provide the required resources you need to be successful within the sales process

Requirements
  • 5 to 7 years or more of selling to stock market investors within the financial industry
  • Current Investment Advisor Representative designation, OR Series 65, OR a combination of FINRA Series 7 and Series 66, OR qualifying financial professional designations or equivalents
  • Extensive experience with bringing in new investor business, high-volume phone activity, and in-person meetings, working as an investment advisor or external wholesaler with a strong track record of success in sales and bringing in new investment assets
  • Record of six-figure earnings in each of the past 3 years (pay for production compensation model)

Benefits
  • Commission/variable pay-based position--$100,000 base salary to start with a gradual step-down decline to $0, plus uncapped commission that will increase substantially with commissions on any new sale for years to come; compensation includes a percentage of estimated first yearโ€™s management fees plus trailers for new business closed, with an average total compensation of $300,000 to $350,000, and top producers earning $1 million or more
  • 100% paid medical, dental, and vision premiums for you and qualifying dependents
  • A 50% 401(k) match, up to the IRS maximum
  • Family Support programs, including 8 weeks Paid Primary Caregiver leave, adoption assistance, and back-up childcare

OUR CLIENT IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
