Job description

Summary: Bellingham Technical College is seeking a Campus Store Manager to lead all aspects of our campus store, from merchandising and inventory management to e-commerce, budgeting, and team leadership. Salary: $75,000-$90,000
Under the general direction of the Vice President of Administrative Services (VPAS), the Campus Store Manager is responsible for day-to-day store activities, initiates procedures for approval, purchases books, supplies, materials, and/or equipment for and maintains appropriate inventory levels; supervises day to day activities of bookstore personnel. The position monitors store inventory and determines when to initiate purchases in accordance with bookstore procedures and coordinates merchandise flow through departments. Additionally, the position works collaboratively with other campus departments in providing service to a diverse population. 
  • Directs and plans operations of the bookstore to provide services to students and employees
  • Manages the purchase of textbooks, other books, various categories of general merchandise, operating equipment and related supplies for resale. Establishes correct margin schedules to cover costs of operation and needs of the College for revenue from enterprise operations
  • Analyzes and assists with the development of departmental budgets, inventory levels and marketing strategies with respect to profit goals and objectives
  • Reviews financial statements for the department and reports to the VPAS with recommendations regarding purchases, expenses, and management of inventory
  • Determine selling price of goods sold in bookstore(s) within established policies and regarding profit goals and objectives
  • Initiates procedures and methods used in ordering, receiving, storing, issuing, returning, and accounting for supplies, and materials, books, and equipment in the retail operation; coordinate textbook returns and sell back over-supply
  • Research new supply sources; locates, interviews and select vendors and suppliers; provides information on purchasing procedures; recommends improvements and/or changes in systems
  • Oversee bookstore computer systems/point-of-sale (POS) system to ensure proper integration of software program and upgrades to existing equipment
  • Confers with college employees; develops order requirements; makes retail forecasts; and initiates orders
  • Plans and coordinates displays, store arrangements, and advertising with seasonal changes, special sales and new merchandise
  • Maintains eCommerce site through designated content management systems (CMS) as made available through website designers
  • Ensures adequate security of facilities, stock and cash in department; acts with authority in the absence of supervisor
  • Maintains positive relations with students, and employees to enhance public relations and further the effectiveness of the campus store
  • Perform duties as assigned


Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Interviews and recommend selection of applicants, trains new employees, coordinates and schedules work
  • Conducts annual performance evaluations and recommends disciplinary action

Required Skills/Abilities: 
  • Solid operational and management skills to independently run and operate a small business
  • Excellent customer service skills for internal users and collaboration with external partners
  • Proficient in writing documentation, either independently or using collaborative tools
  • Knowledge of marketing and recruitment techniques
  • Excellent customer services, coaching, communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Retail store inventory control processes and systems; methods and procedures used in the purchase of college bookstore textbooks and non-text items, including giftware and clothing
  • Record-keeping and inventory techniques; basic computer skills
  • Work alongside individuals of varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds, and abilities in an inclusive and participatory manner
  • Facilitate and conduct workshops, and presentations
  • Work with various software packages including Microsoft Office 365 and database management
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands in a potentially stressful environment
  • Adapt readily to new challenges, processes and job responsibilities
  • Possess strong analytic and problem-solving capabilities
  • Display integrity and act with discretion by accessing individual or institutional information for a stated business purpose
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, point-of-sale system(s) and related data systems and software
  • Proficient in project management

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Ability to pass a Washington State background check
  • High school diploma or GED certification

AND 

  • At least 4 years of experience in retail sales

AND

  • At least 2 years of supervisory experience
  • At least 2 years experience managing current point-of-sale systems
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Associate degree 
  • More than 4 years of experience in retail sales
  • Experience with BookLog point-of-sale system and/or two or more years of managing a point-of-sale system
  • More than 2 years of supervisory experience
  • Experience working in higher education and/or career and technical education

Salary: $75,000-$90,000
