Job description

Job Summary
The SEE Interpreter facilitates communication between the student, their peers, and school staff by transliterating spoken English into Signing Exact English and vice-versa. This position is essential for ensuring the student has full access to the elementary curriculum, social interactions, and school-wide activities.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Literal Transliteration: Provide accurate, real-time transliteration of classroom lectures, discussions, and instructions using SEE to mirror spoken English grammar and syntax.
  • Voice-to-Sign & Sign-to-Voice: Convert spoken messages into SEE for the student and interpret the student’s signs into spoken English for the teacher and peers.
  • Instructional Support: Under teacher supervision, provide tutoring or clarification on vocabulary and concepts that the student may find challenging.
  • IEP Collaboration: Participate as a member of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team, helping to implement communication goals and accommodations.
  • Assistive Technology: Assist with the setup and daily monitoring of specialized equipment, such as FM systems, hearing aids, or other audio support tools.
  • School Integration: Facilitate communication during non-academic times, including recess, lunch, assemblies, and field trips.
 
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Certification: Must meet Washington State requirements for educational interpreters, typically requiring an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) score of 3.5 or higher.
  • Specialized Skill: Advanced proficiency in Signing Exact English (SEE) and a strong command of English grammar and vocabulary.
  • Education: An Associate’s degree or higher in Educational Interpreting or a related field is often required.
  • Professionalism: Adherence to the RID Code of Professional Conduct, maintaining strict student confidentiality and professional boundaries.
 
Location & Context
  • School: Crestwood Elementary School (Kent School District).
  • Environment: A dynamic elementary setting requiring the ability to adapt communication to a child's developmental level.
