What does a closed captioning editor do?

A Closed Captioning Editor is responsible for creating, editing, and timing captions for videos, TV shows, and other media to ensure accurate and accessible subtitles for viewers, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing. They transcribe dialogue, sound effects, and other relevant audio elements while ensuring proper synchronization with the visuals. Attention to detail, grammar, and timing are crucial for maintaining readability and accuracy. Many professionals in this role use specialized captioning software to enhance efficiency and compliance with industry standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a closed captioning editor?

To excel as a Closed Captioning Editor, you need excellent grammar, spelling, and listening skills, often supported by a background in English, communications, or media production. Familiarity with captioning software such as EZTitles, CaptionMaker, or similar tools, and awareness of standards like FCC or ADA regulations, are highly beneficial. Attention to detail, strong time management, and the ability to work independently or communicate with a remote team are valuable soft skills. Mastery of these skills ensures accuracy, accessibility, and timely delivery of quality captions for broadcasts, streaming, and other media platforms.

What are some common challenges faced by closed captioning editors?

Closed Captioning Editors often navigate tight deadlines and must ensure captions are synchronized accurately with audio, which requires strong concentration and attention to detail. Dealing with difficult audio quality, multiple speakers, or industry-specific jargon can add complexity to the editing process. Many positions are remote or freelance, so editors need to be comfortable working independently and managing their workflow efficiently. Collaboration with video editors, translators, and producers is also common, especially when captions must meet specific client or regulatory standards.

How to become a closed captioning editor?

To become a closed captioning editor, you typically need strong typing and listening skills, proficiency with captioning software, and a good understanding of grammar and punctuation. Many employers prefer candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent, and some may require certification or training in captioning standards. Gaining experience through freelance work or internships can also improve job prospects.
