What Is Clinical Informatics?

Clinical informatics is a field within the discipline of information technology. The purpose of clinical informatics is to implement technology and theories in order to collect, store, and modify clinical information and electronic records to improve patient care and information sharing among healthcare professionals. Clinical informatics investigates the most efficient and user-friendly ways data can be organized, structured, shared, and accessed. It has practical implications for healthcare provision throughout the industry, including at hospitals, clinics, and military and research facilities.

What are some entry level jobs in health informatics?

Entry-level jobs in health informatics include roles such as Health Informatics Assistant, Clinical Data Coordinator, or Medical Records Technician. These positions often require basic knowledge of electronic health records (EHR) systems, strong organizational skills, and sometimes a relevant certification or degree in health information management or related fields.

How does a Clinical Informatics professional typically collaborate with healthcare providers and IT teams?

Clinical Informatics professionals play a key bridging role between healthcare providers and IT departments. They work closely with clinicians to understand workflow needs and translate those requirements into technical solutions, such as optimizing electronic health records (EHR) or implementing new clinical decision support tools. Regular collaboration involves facilitating training sessions, gathering feedback, and troubleshooting system issues to ensure that technology effectively supports patient care. This cross-functional teamwork is essential for successful adoption and ongoing improvement of health information systems.

What is the difference between Clinical Informatics vs Medical Informatics?

AspectClinical InformaticsMedical Informatics
CredentialsOften requires certifications like CAHIMS or CPHIMSSimilar certifications, with additional focus on broader healthcare data
Work EnvironmentHospitals, clinics, healthcare systemsResearch institutions, healthcare IT companies, academia
Employer & IndustryHealthcare providers, hospitalsHealthcare technology firms, research organizations
Search & Comparison IntentFocuses on clinical settings and patient careEncompasses broader healthcare data management and policy

Clinical Informatics primarily concentrates on applying informatics to improve patient care within clinical settings. Medical Informatics has a broader scope, including healthcare data management, research, and policy. Both roles require similar certifications and often overlap in skills, but their focus areas differ based on work environment and industry applications.

What is clinical informatics?

Clinical informatics is a field that focuses on the use of information technology and data to improve patient care and healthcare outcomes. Professionals in this area work at the intersection of healthcare, computer science, and information management to design, implement, and optimize electronic health records, clinical decision support systems, and other digital tools. Their goal is to streamline healthcare processes, enhance patient safety, and ensure that clinicians have access to accurate and timely information. Clinical informaticists often collaborate with physicians, nurses, IT professionals, and administrators to bridge the gap between clinical practice and technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Clinical Informatics specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Clinical Informatics specialist, you need a solid background in healthcare, information technology, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in health informatics or a related field. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, clinical decision support tools, and certifications such as Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the capacity to bridge clinical and technical teams are standout soft skills. These competencies are essential for optimizing healthcare delivery, ensuring data accuracy, and facilitating the adoption of technology in clinical environments.

Position description
Applied Clinical Informatics Faculty Search
The newly-established UCSF Division of Clinical Informatics and Digital Transformation (DoC-IT) within the Department of Medicine is seeking faculty at all career levels with background, skills, and a history of success in applied clinical informatics research, under the leadership of founding division chief Julia Adler-Milstein. We are open to a broad array of traditional clinical informatics domains as well as population health informatics, public health informatics, and consumer health informatics. Current research domains in the division include: applying AI (including large language models) to real-world care, informatics and medical education, and using informatics to advance healthcare value, diagnostic excellence, health equity, and population health.
Candidates at all ranks are encouraged to apply. Candidates at the associate- and full-professor ranks will require a strong track record of independent research funding, publication, and an ability to foster collaborations with health system partners, industry, policymakers, and/or researchers.
Though these are research-focused positions, clinician-scientists (e.g., MD, DNP, PharmD, DDS) may have clinical opportunities matched to their certification and interest.
Candidates will have access to the robust research eco-system within DoC-IT, the Department of Medicine, and UCSF. DoC-IT is the home of the Center for Clinical Informatics and Improvement Research (CLIIR; https://cliir.ucsf.edu/ ) that leads pioneering research on how to maximize the impact of digital health on health system performance. The Division also houses UCSF's large Clinical Informatics Fellowship. Lastly, the Division has expertise in, and access to, UCSF Health's system EHR data as well as a strong relationship with the health system to facilitate intervention-based informatics research. Research involving our partner safety net hospital (Zuckerberg San Francisco General) and VA are also possible. For more information on the Division of Clinical Informatics and Digital Transformation, visit our website at https://docit.ucsf.edu/ .
Candidates whose research informs health policy also may become affiliated with the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies (IHPS), an interdisciplinary organized research unit at UCSF. For more information about IHPS, visit their website at https://healthpolicy.ucsf.edu . Candidates whose research informs computational health science may become affiliated with the Bakar Institute for Computational Health Sciences (BCHSI), another interdisciplinary organized research unit at UCSF. For more information about BCHSI, visit their website at https://bakarinstitute.ucsf.edu/
Interested applicants for all positions should upload a statement of research (past, current, future), their CV, and a statement of teaching.
Candidates must possess either a PhD, MD, DNP, PharmD, DDS, or equivalent degree. For clinician-scientists who want their appointment to include clinical practice, MDs must be board certified and eligible for licensure in the State of California. For other clinician-scientists, the requirements associated with performing clinical work will be determined.
Please apply online at: https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF05972 . Applicant's materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.
The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5 The minimum base salary range for this position is $114,100-$344,400. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.
