What is a clinical assistant?

As a clinical assistant, your responsibilities are to provide support to doctors, nurses, and lab techs, along with performing limited patient care tasks. Your daily duties are to set up exam rooms, record patient medical history, and enter information into computerized medical records. Other responsibilities include collecting blood and urine samples from patients and assisting lab techs in completing diagnostic testing such as urinalysis and hematology. You can find clinical assistant jobs in doctors’ offices, medical clinics, hospitals, and laboratories.

What are some common challenges clinical assistants face when supporting multiple healthcare providers simultaneously?

Clinical Assistants often work in fast-paced clinical environments where they may be assigned to support several healthcare providers at once. A common challenge is efficiently managing time and prioritizing tasks such as preparing exam rooms, updating patient records, and assisting with procedures, all while maintaining high standards of patient care. Clear communication, strong organizational skills, and adaptability are essential to ensure that the needs of both patients and providers are met without compromising quality. Building good rapport with the team and proactively anticipating provider needs can help Clinical Assistants navigate these demands successfully.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a clinical assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Clinical Assistant, you need a solid understanding of basic medical procedures, patient care protocols, and often a relevant certification such as Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA). Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems, scheduling software, and basic diagnostic tools is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help Clinical Assistants support both patients and healthcare teams. These skills are crucial for maintaining efficient clinical operations, ensuring patient safety, and providing a positive healthcare experience.

Certifications like CMA or RMA are common for Medical Assistants, whereas Clinical Assistants may require specific clinical certifications depending on the employer.

What do you need to be a clinical assistant?

To become a clinical assistant, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with relevant healthcare training or certification such as CPR. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a medical environment are also important. Job description

Description

Full-Time | 1.0 FTE | Northeast Wisconsin

Neuroscience Group is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join our collaborative Neurosurgery team. This is an excellent opportunity for an APP who is interested in developing a broad neurosurgical skill set while working closely with experienced surgeons, APPs, nurses, and clinical support staff.

The Nurse Practitioner will join a general neurosurgery team consisting of a neurosurgeon, APP, RN, and Clinical Assistants, while also working collaboratively with our other neurosurgical teams. The role provides exposure to the full continuum of neurosurgical care-from the clinic and operating room to inpatient rounding and postoperative follow-up.

Our surgical practice includes a high volume of elective spine procedures, along with significant exposure to cranial surgery, trauma, functional neurosurgery, and peripheral nerve cases. The Nurse Practitioner will assist in surgery, participate in inpatient and outpatient care, and gradually assume greater clinical and procedural responsibility through hands-on training and mentorship.

New graduates are encouraged to apply. Prior operating room or procedural experience is preferred but not required.

What You Can Expect

This is a 1.0 FTE position with a fixed monthly block schedule. Individual weeks will vary, but the typical week averages:

  • 1 operating room day
  • 3 clinic days
  • 1 administrative/clerical support day

The position is expected to evolve over time and may eventually include occasional weekend coverage to support the on-call neurosurgeon as well as potential outreach clinic responsibilities throughout Northeastern Wisconsin.

Requirements

Your Role

As a Neurosurgery Nurse Practitioner, you will work closely with the supervising neurosurgeon to provide high-quality inpatient and outpatient neurosurgical care. The position encompasses surgical assistance, postoperative management, comprehensive clinical assessment, patient and family education, care coordination, and ongoing management throughout the patient's course of care.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Perform comprehensive and problem-focused histories and physical examinations.
  • Review and interpret laboratory testing, diagnostic studies, and imaging.
  • Develop differential and working diagnoses and formulate treatment plans in collaboration with the neurosurgeon.
  • Independently manage the majority of appropriate clinic visits, with the neurosurgeon readily available for consultation.
  • Evaluate new patients, postoperative patients, routine follow-up visits, and patients requiring same-day evaluation.
  • Order appropriate diagnostic testing and coordinate treatment plans.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, treatment options, surgical procedures, recovery, and ongoing care.
  • Assist the neurosurgeon in the operating room, including spine, cranial, and other neurosurgical procedures.
  • Develop surgical skills through direct, hands-on training with progressively increased responsibility based on competency and experience.
  • Perform appropriate bedside and clinical procedures independently once competency has been established.
  • Participate in inpatient hospital rounds, admissions, postoperative management, discharge planning, and coordination of care.
  • Work collaboratively with other Neurosurgery APPs to manage the inpatient census using a team-based approach.
  • Review imaging, laboratory results, and other diagnostic findings in collaboration with the neurosurgical team.
  • Respond to patient clinical questions, prescription needs, and changes in condition.
  • Collaborate closely with surgeons, APPs, nursing staff, Clinical Assistants, and other members of the Neuroscience Group care team.

A Role Designed for Growth

We are looking for someone who is eager to learn neurosurgery and grow into the position. You will receive direct training from your assigned neurosurgeon, including exposure to neurosurgical conditions, clinical decision-making, procedures, and surgical techniques.

Clinic days may be conducted independently or alongside a surgeon or another APP. As your knowledge and experience grow, you will be expected to manage most appropriate clinic patients independently while maintaining ready access to the neurosurgeon for consultation.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to develop expertise across clinic, inpatient, and operative neurosurgery rather than being limited to one aspect of patient care.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Current or eligible for appropriate Nurse Practitioner/APRN licensure in the State of Wisconsin.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • DEA registration or eligibility to obtain registration.
  • Neurosurgery, neurology, surgical, operating room, or procedural experience is preferred but not required.
  • New graduates are welcome and encouraged to apply.
  • Strong clinical judgment and commitment to learning.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and patient-care skills.
  • Interest in developing procedural and surgical skills within a general neurosurgery practice.

Why Neuroscience Group?

For more than 30 years, Neuroscience Group has provided specialized brain, spine, and pain care to patients throughout Northeast Wisconsin. Our physician-owned and physician-led practice brings together a broad range of specialties and providers who work collaboratively to deliver exceptional patient care.

Joining our Neurosurgery team means becoming part of a practice where APPs are integral members of the care team-not simply support staff. You will have the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with patients, work directly alongside experienced neurosurgeons, develop advanced clinical and surgical skills, and participate in patient care from initial evaluation through surgery, hospitalization, recovery, and long-term follow-up.

If you are an experienced APP looking to expand your neurosurgical expertise-or a motivated new graduate looking for an opportunity to build a career in neurosurgery-we encourage you to apply.

Benefits

At Neuroscience Group we offer a very competitive salary. In addition to great pay, we also offer the following benefits:

  • Health Insurance
  • Health Savings Accounts with a generous employer contribution
  • Dental Insurance
  • Vision Insurance
  • Company paid Long Term Disability and Life Insurance

  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Annual voluntary health risk assessments (company paid)
  • Timber Rattler tickets
  • Holiday party, summer picnic, and annual recognition for years of service
  • Annual Employee Appreciation Day
