What is a CLC?

A CLC (Certified Lactation Counselor) is a professional trained to support breastfeeding parents by providing lactation education, troubleshooting common nursing challenges, and promoting healthy infant feeding practices. They work in hospitals, clinics, or private practice, offering guidance on latch techniques, milk supply, and breastfeeding positions. CLCs play a crucial role in ensuring both parent and baby receive proper support during the breastfeeding journey.

What does a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) do?

A typical day for a CLC often involves meeting with new parents to provide one-on-one lactation consultations, conducting breastfeeding assessments, and developing personalized care plans. CLCs may also facilitate group classes, answer follow-up questions by phone or email, and collaborate with nurses, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive support. Documentation and updating patient records are routine tasks, and some days may include participating in breastfeeding education initiatives or community outreach. The work environment can vary, with CLCs employed in hospitals, clinics, private practices, or providing home visits, making adaptability and a supportive attitude essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the CLC position?

To excel as a Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), you need a solid understanding of lactation principles, infant feeding techniques, and experience with maternal-child health, often demonstrated by completing a recognized CLC training program and certification exam. Familiarity with patient record systems, breastfeeding assessment tools, and maintaining certification through ongoing education is important. Compassion, strong communication, and problem-solving skills help CLCs effectively support diverse families and navigate sensitive situations. These capabilities empower CLCs to deliver evidence-based care and guidance, improving breastfeeding outcomes and maternal-infant health.
