Claims Adjusters often encounter challenges such as handling a high volume of cases, meeting tight deadlines, and navigating complex policy details. Managing stress and maintaining strong organizational skills are crucial for staying on top of caseloads. Effective communication is also key, as you'll regularly interact with policyholders, witnesses, and other professionals to gather information and resolve claims. Employers typically provide training and support, and many adjusters find that building strong relationships within their team helps them share best practices and manage challenging cases more efficiently.

Is a claims adjuster a stressful job?

What are claims adjusters?

Claims adjusters are professionals who investigate insurance claims to determine the extent of an insurance company's liability. Their goal is to ensure that claims are handled fairly and efficiently while minimizing unnecessary costs for the insurer. Claims adjusters may work for insurance companies, third-party administrators, or as independent contractors.

How do I become a claims adjuster?

To become a claims adjuster, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, and some states require a license which involves completing pre-licensing education and passing an exam. In Michigan, obtaining a license through the Department of Insurance and Financial Services is necessary, and having skills in communication, investigation, and familiarity with claims processing software is beneficial.

Claims Adjuster I/II (Mid-Level) - Auto Liability
Department: Claims Reports To: Claims Manager FLSA Status: Exempt Location: McDonough, Georgia
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Claims Adjuster to manage a caseload of auto liability claims from first notice of loss through resolution. The ideal candidate brings 3-5 years of liability claims-handling experience and demonstrates strong investigative, negotiation, and file-documentation skills. Cargo claims experience is strongly preferred and will be given priority consideration, as this role may support a book of business involving motor carrier and cargo liability exposures.
Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate, evaluate, and resolve auto liability claims of moderate to high complexity, ensuring compliance with state regulations and company best practices.
  • Conduct timely and thorough investigations, including scene inspections, witness interviews, and coordination with independent adjusters, engineers, and other experts as needed.
  • Analyze liability and damages; issue reserve recommendations in accordance with authority level.
  • Negotiate settlements directly with claimants, attorneys, and third parties within assigned settlement authority.
  • Evaluate and process cargo liability claims, including analysis of bills of lading, cargo insurance policies, Carmack Amendment exposure, and interline/broker liability issues (where applicable).
  • Maintain accurate, well-documented claim files, including timely diary management, status updates, and reserve adjustments.
  • Identify subrogation, salvage, and fraud indicators, and refer files appropriately.
  • Communicate claim status and resolution strategy clearly to policyholders, brokers, and internal stakeholders.

Required Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of liability claims adjusting experience, primarily auto liability (commercial auto experience a plus).
  • Active adjuster license(s) as required by state(s) of operation, or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe.
  • Strong working knowledge of liability investigation techniques, coverage analysis, and negotiation strategy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong file documentation habits.
  • Proficiency with claims management systems (e.g., Guidewire, Duck Creek, or similar) and standard MS Office applications.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a diverse caseload under time-sensitive deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior cargo claims experience, including familiarity with:
    • Carmack Amendment liability and federal motor carrier regulations
    • Bills of lading, cargo insurance policies, and broker/carrier liability distinctions
    • Freight loss and damage claim handling, subrogation, and recovery processes
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Industry designations such as AIC, SCLA, or similar (preferred, not required).

Experience working with transportation, logistics, or trucking-focused insureds.
