Job description

General Description This is a high level management and professional engineering position involving responsibility for coordinating, planning, and directing all phases of the City's Bureau of Architecture and Engineering. The City Engineer manages and directs multi disciplined professional/technical employees within the Bureau. The City Engineer makes decisions and recommendations that are recognized as authoritative and have an important and lasting impact on the community, public realm and various engineering and architectural activities.

The City Engineer works under the direction of the Commissioner of Environmental Services. Supervision received is essentially administrative, with assignments given in terms of broad objectives and limits. Performs related work as required.

CITY RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN ONE YEAR OF HIRE. Typical Work Activities Conducts and participates in planning, interpreting, developing and reviewing procedures, projects, programs, and policies; Conducts systematic reviews of the efficiency and economy of the operations of the Bureau and makes recommendations for improvement; Reviews and evaluates plans, designs, working drawings, estimates, contracts, records, reports and related engineering and/or architectural data and makes recommendations; Assists in the preparation of the annual operating and capital budget and controlling of expenditures within budget allowances; Develops long-range planning proposals; Confers with the general public and concerned departments and agencies regarding engineering operations and policies; Analyzes the capabilities and performances of Bureau personnel. Minimum Qualifications Master's degree in Civil Engineering AND five (5) years of experience managing civil engineering projects, three (3) years of which were in a supervisory capacity; OR Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering AND six (6) years of experience as described in 1.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. Possession of a New York State Professional Engineer's license, or ability to obtain registration through a reciprocity agreement. 2.

Possession of a New York State Class D Drivers license.
