Job description

Arcadis is the world's leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets.
We are more than 34,000 people, in over 30 countries, dedicated to improving quality of life. Everyone has an important role to play. With the power of many curious minds, together we can solve the world's most complex challenges and deliver more impact together.
Role description:
Arcadis is seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to join our Design Engineering team. This is a remote flexible opportunity. The candidate selected for this role can be based out of any Arcadis office in the Western US with an expectation of full-time office or hybrid home-office working.
As a Principal Civil Engineer, you will support a growing base of complex mining, reclamation, restoration, and development projects throughout North America, engage directly with our clients and the regulatory community, and serve as a mentor to junior staff. Engineering activities will include providing technical leadership at all levels of project delivery from conceptual planning through design and into construction.
Work activities will include a mix of design analysis, calculation preparation and review, technical advisory roles, report writing, construction support, cost estimation, value engineering analysis, and leading teams of engineers in project delivery. Projects typically include large-scale earth moving and regrading, engineered containment such as caps and covers and waste repositories, stormwater management facilities, environmental remediation such as waste excavation, roads, land development, and stream and wetland restoration.
The role is primarily office-based with expected project-related travel (e.g., site visits, client engagement, regulatory meetings) up to 20% depending on project and client expectations.
Role accountabilities:
Working closely with project managers and other senior technical team members, you develop concept-level plans tailored to address client needs. You lead and manage teams of junior engineers throughout the entire project lifecycle, from conceptual design and final design to construction and operations & maintenance. Your responsibilities include reviewing regulations and standards to effectively plan technical studies, project designs, and required permitting activities.
You analyze a variety of documentation-such as technical reports, maps, drawings, test results, and aerial photographs-to understand site characteristics and support civil design development. You perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and develop stormwater management designs, utilizing 3D design software like Autodesk Civil3D to create grading and drainage plans, optimize earthwork, and perform quantity calculations.
Additionally, you design stormwater best management practices, including infiltration basins, bioretention areas, and filters, ensuring compliance with agency requirements. You prepare and oversee the development of design documentation, including drawings and technical specifications, and are able to assist directly as needed. Your role also involves providing senior review of engineering calculation briefs, design reports, drawings, technical specifications, and permitting submittals. You offer office-based construction support by assisting contractors through RFI responses, technical submittal reviews, and implementing real-time design changes based on site conditions.
Furthermore, you present technical and engineering topics to clients and regulatory agencies and collaborate with senior staff on client development activities such as proposal writing, project cost estimating, client presentations, and participation in professional conferences. You also mentor and delegate tasks to junior team members, fostering their professional growth.
Qualifications & Experience:
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
  • Minimum 10 years of experience (15 or more preferred)
  • Prior experience supporting mining projects
  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) with ability to obtain reciprocity in western states
  • Proficiency with civil design using computer-based modeling applications (i.e., AutoCAD Civil 3D or similar)
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office products

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting other market sectors such as oil and gas, landfills, transportation, or power and water utilities
  • Proficiency with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling software (e.g., HydroCAD, WinTR-55, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM, or similar)
  • Experience with mine permitting requirements and federal environmental regulations (e.g. CERCLA)
  • Prior experience as an Engineer of Record
