How does a Civil Design Engineer typically collaborate with other professionals on large infrastructure projects?

As a Civil Design Engineer, you’ll regularly work alongside architects, surveyors, construction managers, and environmental specialists to ensure that all aspects of a project align with regulatory standards and client requirements. Collaboration often involves participating in multidisciplinary meetings, sharing design drafts, resolving technical issues, and coordinating project timelines. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial, as your design decisions directly impact construction, budgeting, and long-term project sustainability. This collaborative environment helps broaden your experience and can open opportunities for advancement into project management or specialized technical roles.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior civil design engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills, and advanced certifications can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $300,000 annually, especially in high-demand sectors or consulting roles. Achieving this level often requires leadership responsibilities, project management, and expertise in complex infrastructure projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Civil Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Civil Design Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, mathematics, and design standards, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and EIT or PE certification. Proficiency with CAD software (like AutoCAD or Civil 3D), structural analysis tools, and project management systems is essential. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help set you apart in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and innovative infrastructure solutions that meet regulatory requirements and client needs.

While both roles work in similar environments and industries, the Civil Design Engineer has a broader scope involving project planning and engineering analysis, whereas Civil Drafters concentrate on drafting and documentation tasks.

What do design civil engineers do?

Design civil engineers develop plans and specifications for infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and drainage systems. They use engineering principles, computer-aided design (CAD) software, and project management skills to create safe, efficient, and sustainable designs that meet regulatory standards. Their work often involves collaboration with architects, surveyors, and construction teams throughout project development.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as petroleum, aerospace, or software engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. These roles typically require advanced skills, extensive experience, and sometimes leadership responsibilities or working in high-demand industries.

Job description

Description
The Mannik & Smith Group (MSG) is a people-focused, award-winning, full-service consulting firm offering civil and geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, planning, landscape architecture, agriculture, surveying, and construction support. Our talented team of 650+ professionals delivers integrated planning, design, engineering, and construction solutions.
Design Southeast Michigan's Future From a Pretty Cool Office
MSG is growing, and we're looking for a motivated Civil Design Engineer with 0-2 years of experience and solid Autodesk Civil 3D skills to join our Detroit, MI office — which, fair warning, has serious industrial character. Big open space, the kind of place where you can actually picture yourself building a career. You'll support engineers and project managers in producing civil/site design plans, reports, and calculations for municipal infrastructure and private development projects across the region — real technical work that builds real skills, not busywork.
And we back that growth with more than a cool office: this role comes with a guaranteed seat in Blueprint, our new early career leadership program for engineers looking to grow beyond the typical entry-level experience. Over six months, you'll take part in a hands-on curriculum covering professional development, business acumen, and project delivery — including case studies, simulations, and role-play exercises — covering topics like project economics, communication, and leadership fundamentals. It all wraps up with an in-person capstone event where you'll present your work and map out your goals for the year ahead. Your Future Starts With A Plan.

What You'll Do
Develop design drawings and plans using Autodesk Civil 3D, including:
  • Site grading
  • Alignments and profiles
  • Surfaces and corridors
  • Utility layouts
  • Storm sewer and sanitary sewer networks
Prepare components of engineering packages such as:
  • Construction drawings
  • Quantities and cost estimates
  • Drainage calculations and reports
  • Permit submittals
Assist senior engineers and project managers with:
  • Technical analysis
  • Project coordination
  • Quality control reviews
  • Scheduling and task planning
  • Get out of the office for periodic field visits — site assessments, measurements, and construction support
  • Make sure every deliverable meets municipal, county, and state standards

What You Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field
  • EIT preferred
  • 1–3 years of civil/site design experience — recent grads with strong internship or co-op experience are encouraged to apply
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Civil 3D for drafting and basic design
  • A solid grasp of civil engineering concepts, including grading, utilities, stormwater, and site layout
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfort working in a team-oriented environment

Why MSG?
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Health insurance with HSA option, Vision, Dental, Life
  • Flexible schedule
  • Paid time off
  • Referral program
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Catalytic Coaching — a personalized development plan built to grow your contributions today and your opportunities tomorrow. At MSG, bringing out the best in our people isn't a slogan — it's how we operate.
It is the policy of our company to follow equal employment opportunity procedures in compliance with federal, state and local criteria. We will provide all applicants for employment, and all employees, with equal opportunity without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, marital status, arrest record, disability, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, military or veteran status, and/or any other protected classes covered by any local, state and federal laws.
