CCHCs, or Child Care Health Consultants, are health professionals—often nurses or public health experts—who collaborate with child care providers to promote healthy and safe environments for children. They provide guidance on health policies, infection control, nutrition, and developmental concerns, and help child care programs comply with health regulations. CCHCs also offer training, resources, and support to staff and families, enhancing the overall well-being of children in care settings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Child Care Health Consultant (CCHC), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Child Care Health Consultant (CCHC), you need a background in nursing or public health, experience in pediatric or community health, and typically RN or similar licensure. Familiarity with state childcare regulations, health assessment tools, and documentation systems is crucial. Strong communication, cultural competence, and problem-solving abilities help CCHCs educate and support childcare staff and families. These skills are essential for ensuring safe, healthy environments in childcare settings and promoting overall child well-being.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a CCHC (Child Care Health Consultant)?

A Child Care Health Consultant (CCHC) typically spends their day providing guidance to child care programs on health and safety practices, conducting site visits to observe and assess environments, and developing or reviewing health policies. They often offer staff training on topics such as infection control, medication administration, and emergency preparedness. Additionally, CCHCs collaborate with child care providers, families, and community health resources to ensure children’s well-being and compliance with regulations. This role involves both direct consultation and ongoing support, making strong communication and organizational skills essential.
