Job description

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge is seeking a full time Immigration Case Manager/Paralegal ("CMP") has an essential role in the function of the Immigration Legal Services program of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge. The CMP will support the Managing and Staff Attorneys in representing the immigrant population. This position requires maintaining external relationships and representing the agency to the public, as such it requires a polished business-like demeanor and professional appearance, which excludes unnatural hair color, conspicuous body art and facial piercings.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate degree, paralegal certification, or other relevant degree. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of educational requirements.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
  • At least 2 years' experience in a non-profit, immigration or social service setting preferred.
  • Valid Driver's license, reliable personal transportation, and current proof of vehicle insurance required.
  • Completion of background checks such as driving record, criminal record, and sex offense registry, state and local police records, or national sources such as FBI and E-Verify as required by funding agencies or determined necessary by Catholic Charities and results must be satisfactory to CCDBR, its representatives, employees, or agents as an essential requirement of employment.
  • Ability to work irregular hours and weekends on short notice is required

Skills:
  • Fluency in English is required
  • Proficiency in Dari, Pashto, Arabic or Spanish preferred
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive, professional relationship with co-workers, participants, and visitors; cultural sensitivity and the ability to relate well and effectively in a diverse workplace with a diverse client population is required
  • Knowledge of an experience working with refugee or immigrants preferred
  • Cross-cultural or international experience preferred
  • Excellent crisis intervention skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to balance multiple simultaneous responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office platform and ability to learn case management database systems
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to think strategically and creatively problem solve
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to work in a dynamic team and build strong working relationships
  • Ability to flexibly share leadership and build consensus
  • Ability to take initiative and make difficult decisions when necessary

Primary Duties:
  • Ongoing culturally sensitive and legal case management services
  • Data entry, file maintenance and reporting
  • Administrative support to Immigration Legal Services Department
  • Community Outreach

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Temperature controlled indoor work environment. Fluorescent lighting, occasional isolated conditions
  • Must be able to lift 5 to 20 lbs. occasionally for 5 - 30 minutes. This position requires the employee to walk, stoop, lift, bend, squat, kneel, climb, handle. Sitting for 6 to 7 hours a day is expected for this position.
  • Driving a motor vehicle for several hours at a time is expected up to 70%
  • When the agency responds to disasters, performing duties outside primary responsibilities both in the office and at off-site locations affected by the disaster may be requested.
