What is a catcher?

A catcher is a key defensive player in baseball who crouches behind home plate to receive pitches thrown by the pitcher. The catcher is responsible for catching pitched balls, preventing base stealing, guiding the pitcher on pitch selection, and making plays at the plate. They also play a critical role in fielding bunts, guarding home plate, and communicating strategy with other players. Catchers wear specialized equipment for protection due to their proximity to the batter and the speed of incoming pitches.
