What are some common challenges faced by Carpentry Project Managers when coordinating between clients and subcontractors?

Carpentry Project Managers often encounter challenges in aligning client expectations with subcontractor capabilities and schedules. Managing clear communication, ensuring that project specifications are understood by all parties, and promptly addressing any changes or issues can be demanding. Proactive problem-solving and transparent communication are key to overcoming these challenges.

To thrive as a Carpentry Project Manager, you need a strong background in carpentry, project management, construction processes, and typically a relevant degree or certification. Leadership, problem-solving, and clear communication are critical soft skills for coordinating teams and stakeholders. These abilities ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to quality standards while maintaining safety and client satisfaction.

What does a Carpentry Project Manager do?

Their responsibilities include managing resources, ordering materials, ensuring safety compliance, and resolving any issues that arise during the project. Effective communication and leadership skills are essential for this role.

Job description

LEAD CARPENTER / PROJECT MANAGER Synergy Design & Construction — Reston, VA $38–$42/hr | Full-Time | M–F, No Weekends

About the Role

Synergy Design & Construction is an award-winning residential remodeling firm in Reston, VA, and we're looking for an experienced Lead Carpenter / Project Manager to own job sites from demo day through final punch list.

This is a working position — you'll be hands-on in the field while also serving as the primary point of contact for our clients and trade partners. If you take pride in your craft, hate being pushed to cut corners, and want consistent year-round work with a company that actually values quality over speed, this is your opportunity.

We work exclusively in Reston and the immediate surrounding area. No Maryland. No DC.

What You'll Do

  • Perform hands-on carpentry: framing (floors, walls, decks), finish trim (crown, base, casing), and cabinetry installation
  • Lead demolition, rough framing, and punch list completion
  • Supervise and inspect trade partner work across all disciplines — electrical, plumbing, HVAC, roofing, drywall, painting, and masonry
  • Read and execute from detailed architectural plans
  • Manage job site schedule, budget adherence, and daily documentation
  • Serve as the on-site point of contact for homeowners throughout each project

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience in residential remodeling (not new construction)
  • Strong finish carpentry and cabinetry installation skills
  • Proven ability to manage a job site independently
  • Comfortable reading architectural and construction plans
  • Excellent communication skills — with clients, subcontractors, and an in-house design team
  • Organized, accountable, and professional
  • A genuine pride in the finished product

Why Synergy

  • Local focus — we work only in Reston and nearby NoVA communities
  • In-house design team — plans and materials are finalized before you arrive on site
  • Quality over speed — always
  • Stable, year-round work — no seasonal layoffs, no slowdowns
  • No weekends — consistent Monday–Friday schedule

Compensation & Benefits

  • $38–$42/hr based on experience
  • Health, Dental & Vision Insurance (50% employer contribution)
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • Paid Time Off & Paid Holidays
  • Flexible Spending Account
  • Annual Tool & PPE Allowance
  • Mileage Reimbursement
  • 40 hours/week, M–F, year-round

To Apply

Submit your resume and, if available, photos of past finish work you're proud of. We review every application personally and respond to candidates who appear to be a strong fit.
