Job description

Job Summary:

The Field Repair Technician will perform duties in a safe manner, to include, but not limited to inspection of railcars, various railcar repairs, heating, cutting and welding as determined from inspections under general supervision of supervisor and certification. In addition, Field Repair Technician C will document work completed on Billing Repair Cards/Work Orders.
The purpose of this position is to become proficient and knowledgeable in Field Repair Technician C responsibilities and gain the skills needed to advance to the next field repair technician level.

Job Duties:

  • Performs limited aspects of railcar repair as required to meet regulatory, quality and shop production needs. May include general car repair, blasting, general railcar cleaning, minor paint and stencil/decal touch-up and other tasks as assigned.
  • Ensures that all necessary forms, systems and work order information is complete in order to facilitate correct and timely reporting.
  • Understand and perform all work outlined by supervisor.
  • Interact with crew members and supervisors in a team environment.
  • Perform mechanical repairs to safety appliances and running gear under direct supervision.
  • Clean or degrease weld joint or workpiece.
  • Prepares broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
  • Safely uses torches for cutting metal, heat and straightening parts.
  • Occasionally make weld repairs under direct supervision in the flat position to safety appliances.
  • Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Preheat workpiece with hand torch.
  • Positions and clamps workpieces together or assemble them in jig or fixture.
  • Tack weld assemblies together.
  • Understands and complies with established safety policies and supports continuing awareness for safety.
  • Other duties as assigned to assist the rail division.

Requirements:

  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Basic knowledge and general use of hand and power tools.
  • Jacket Welding Certification
  • Air Brake Test Certification per AAR Publication S-486
