Job description

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Oversees the day-to-day operation of Real-Time Captioning services by managing the access service needs of deaf and hard of hearing students to support academic/non-academic requests
  • Balances demand for service provision with staff resources, and communicates information to staff, students and others as needed
  • Directs and supervises the work of a team of captionists. Provides leadership and guidance and manages HR and employee relations matters
  • Partners with colleagues to oversee department committees and work groups tasked with developing and implementing plans to best support work practices
  • Works collaboratively with team leadership to evaluate equipment, software, and work procedures, and coordinate methods to improve services
  • Directs the provision of resources allocated to online learning, and oversees the budget for such services. Assists in managing the department's budget and payroll
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of employee management and supervision
  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf culture
  • Skill in captioning in a university setting, including high profile settings
  • Skill in the use of computers/technology systems, with strong skills in hardware/software
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

Minimum Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • 5 years of relevant experience
  • 2 years of supervisory experience
  • Equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered

Job Level Overview
Management and People Leadership Level 1 - Functions as a front-line supervisor of a work unit, focusing on supervising and setting day-to-day tasks for staff, maintaining schedules, checking work, and supporting daily services to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Assists in overseeing management of (2) Notetaker Coordinators, 400+ student notetakers, and an Administrative Coordinator.
  • Directly supervises a team of 25+ captionists.
  • Directs the exploring real-time captioning for student classroom use and ADA compliant captioning softwares.
