Job Overview

The Material Planning Manager is responsible for leading material planning activities to ensure uninterrupted production and on-time customer delivery. This role oversees demand planning alignment, material availability, and inventory optimization while driving continuous improvement across planning processes and systems. The Material Planning Manager partners closely with Manufacturing, Procurement, Engineering, Finance, and Program Management to balance cost, service, and operational efficiency.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and execute material plans to support production schedules, customer demand, and business objectives.
  • Ensure timely availability of raw materials, components, and subassemblies to support manufacturing and program requirements.
  • Monitor and optimize inventory levels to balance service levels, cash flow, and storage constraints.
  • Establish and maintain safety stock policies and planning parameters.
  • Translate production schedules and forecasts into accurate material requirements using MRP/ERP systems.
  • Identify and mitigate material constraints, shortages, and risks to production continuity.
  • Partner with Procurement and Material Program Managers to manage lead times, capacity constraints, and material availability.
  • Work cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, and Finance to resolve material issues and support program execution.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance material planning accuracy, efficiency, and visibility.
  • Support ERP/MRP system enhancements, data accuracy initiatives, and planning tool implementations.
  • Prepare and present material planning metrics, risks, and mitigation plans to leadership.
  • Analyze trends and root causes related to inventory performance and material shortages.
  • Support financial planning and budgeting activities related to inventory and material spend.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Strong working knowledge of MRP/ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics).
  • Experience in a manufacturing or regulated production environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong background in continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma).

Education / Certifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Operations, Engineering, or related field.
  • Master's degree or professional certification (CPIM, CSCP, PMP) preferred

Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in material planning, supply chain, or manufacturing operations.
  • 5+ years of people management or team leadership experience.
  • Experience in a manufacturing or regulated production environment.
  • Experience with S&OP / IBP processes.
  • Experience managing materials in a complex, multi-product or program-based environment.
