How much do capacity manager jobs pay per year?
What does a capacity manager do?
A Capacity Manager is responsible for ensuring that an organization's IT infrastructure and resources can meet current and future business demands. They analyze system capacity, forecast future needs, and optimize resource allocation to prevent performance issues or downtime. This role involves working closely with IT teams, business stakeholders, and vendors to balance cost efficiency with performance requirements. Capacity Managers also develop strategies for scaling infrastructure, manage capacity-related risks, and implement proactive solutions to maintain service levels.
What are some common challenges a capacity manager faces, and how can they be addressed?
A Capacity Manager often faces the challenge of accurately predicting resource needs in rapidly changing business environments, which requires both analytical rigor and adaptability. Managing competing priorities among various departments can also be demanding, as different teams may have fluctuating and sometimes conflicting needs. Effective communication and strong collaboration skills are essential to align expectations and secure buy-in from stakeholders. Staying proactive by regularly reviewing data trends and adjusting plans helps prevent bottlenecks or resource shortages, ensuring projects and operations continue smoothly.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the capacity manager position, and why are they important?
A Capacity Manager typically requires a strong background in data analysis, demand forecasting, process optimization, and a relevant degree such as in business, engineering, or information technology. Familiarity with capacity planning software, resource management tools, and IT Service Management (ITSM) platforms—along with certifications like ITIL—are highly valued. Strong communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help set top performers apart. These skills are crucial for ensuring resource efficiency, balancing workload, and supporting organizational growth in dynamic environments.

Job description
Description
You will play a critical role in ensuring the seamless and efficient movement of products and materials across the Americas region, owning capacity decisions across AMR distribution centers and transportation networks. Using forecasting, scenario modeling, and operational analysis, you will craft sophisticated models and interactive dashboards that drive informed, proactive decision-making - improving service, cost, and throughput performance, and applying strong program management skills to drive logistics readiness planning from strategy through execution.
This role influences volume forecasting and transportation alignment to balance service, cost, and operational efficiency, while managing program budget, timelines, resources, and deliverables. You will partner with stakeholders across supply chain, operations, and sales to understand requirements, evaluate BAU and NPI demand signals, apply analytics to uncover insights, and translate forecasts into actionable capacity plans that ensure alignment and effective execution.
You will also build automation that improves team efficiency, monitor KPIs to identify improvement opportunities, and simplify processes and standardize cadences to improve planning quality and speed. Proactively identifying risks and issues, you will develop contingency and mitigation plans that protect network performance.
Success in this role requires strong analytical judgment, structured problem-solving, and strategic leadership - the ability to turn complex data into clear operational decisions, facilitate projects, and communicate findings in relatable terms that highlight business impact and guide strategic choices for senior leadership. You will navigate ambiguity in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while mentoring a team of logistics professionals.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Operations, Industrial Engineering, Business Analytics, Finance, or related field
5+ years of experience in supply chain planning, capacity planning, logistics operations, program management, or a related analytical role in a high-volume, complex network
Demonstrated ability to structure ambiguous operational problems, build analytical models, and translate outputs into decisions
Strong experience in headcount modeling, volume forecasting, production/capacity planning, and transportation alignment
Experience building forecasting models, scenario analyses, and dashboards that support proactive decision-making
Fluency with analytical tools and BI platforms (Tableau, Power BI, or equivalent)
Proven track record managing complex logistics operations and programs
Strong executive communication and leadership skills, including presenting assumptions, scenarios, tradeoffs, and recommendations to senior leadership and cross-functional partners
Ability to drive decisions in a fast-paced environment; resilient and adaptable, thriving in ambiguity and high-pressure settings
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree (MS or MBA) preferred
Experience planning for both BAU and NPI demand in a dynamic supply chain environment
Collaboration with 3PL partners, carriers, and internal stakeholders to optimize network performance
Automation, process improvement, and continuous improvement experience (Lean, Six Sigma, or equivalent)
Experience with AI-assisted tools (LLMs, GenAI assistants) to accelerate analysis and reporting
Influencing and driving strategic change in a fast-paced, matrix-ed organization
Comfortable diving deep into complex datasets to drive actionable decisions
Leadership presence to inspire teams, foster collaboration, and deliver measurable impact
