What does a campaign developer do?

A campaign developer designs, plans, and executes marketing or advertising campaigns to promote products, services, or causes. They often use tools like marketing automation software and analyze data to optimize campaign performance, working within project timelines and budgets. Strong communication, creativity, and understanding of target audiences are essential skills for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Campaign Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Campaign Developer, you need expertise in marketing automation, email campaign management, and data-driven strategy, often supported by a degree in marketing or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Marketo, or HubSpot, as well as certifications in these platforms, is highly valuable. Attention to detail, creativity, and strong communication skills set outstanding candidates apart in this role. These competencies ensure that campaigns are effectively designed, executed, and optimized to achieve marketing goals and drive engagement.

How does a Campaign Developer typically collaborate with marketing and technical teams during a campaign launch?

A Campaign Developer works closely with both marketing strategists and IT or web development teams to bring campaigns to life. They translate creative briefs into technical requirements, ensuring that email templates, landing pages, and automation workflows align with the campaign's objectives. Regular communication is essential to troubleshoot issues quickly and adapt to changing requirements. This cross-functional collaboration helps ensure campaigns are delivered on time, meet brand standards, and effectively engage the target audience.

What are Campaign Developers?

Job description

Placement Type:
Temporary
Salary:
$40-45 Hourly
Start Date:
Jun 29, 2026
We are seeking a dynamic individual to join our team as a specialist in orchestrating high-volume, real-time omni-channel communications. In this pivotal role, you won't just manage campaigns; you'll design, build, and operate the foundational capabilities that power personalized interactions across mobile, push, email, SMS, and in-app channels. Your expertise will directly shape how our client delivers the right message to the right customer at the right time, ensuring seamless, reliable, and impactful communication experiences. This is an incredible opportunity to drive innovation, optimize customer journeys, and make a tangible difference in how our client engages with its vast audience.
Responsibilities
Platform Enablement:
  • Collaborate with Software Engineers to develop and implement backend services and APIs for notification creation, orchestration, routing, sending, and tracking, particularly for mobile and push channels.
  • Contribute to building reusable components (templates, personalization, experimentation, preference management) that will be utilized for day-to-day campaign operations.

Omni-channel Integration:
  • Support the integration with various communication providers/gateways (email, SMS, push, in-app), focusing on maintaining robust connectors, especially for mobile and push.
  • Help implement channel-agnostic patterns to enable product and marketing teams to launch campaigns across multiple channels with minimal additional engineering effort.
  • Partner with upstream orchestration/journey tools and downstream channel endpoints to ensure end-to-end reliability of communication flows.

Reliability & Operations:
  • Contribute to defining and monitoring Service Level Indicators/Objectives and error budgets for critical notification services.
  • Support the implementation of comprehensive logging, metrics, tracing, and alerting systems for rapid issue detection and resolution.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement of operational runbooks, in collaboration with platform engineering.

Data, Targeting, & Experimentation:
  • Work with data engineering and activation teams to securely consume customer and event data for targeting, triggers, and personalization of mobile/push campaigns.
  • Help implement guardrails for frequency capping, throttling, suppression, and failover strategies across all channels, with a focus on mobile/push experiences.
  • Enable A/B tests and experiments at both platform and activation levels (e.g., templates, channels, timing, routing).

Compliance, Security, & Governance:
  • Assist in implementing and maintaining guardrails for consent, opt-in/opt-out, and channel-level preferences, considering regional and regulatory nuances (e.g., privacy regulations, communication compliance standards).
  • Ensure secure handling of customer data and secrets in alignment with enterprise security policies.
  • Collaborate with Legal, Privacy, Security, and Compliance teams to embed requirements into platform capabilities and campaign activation workflows.

Collaboration & Activation Transition:
  • Partner with product managers, channel operations, marketing activation, and mobile/web teams to translate business requirements into scalable technical designs and activation playbooks.
  • Contribute to technical roadmaps, backlog grooming, and prioritization for the notification platform, ensuring future activation needs (especially those leveraging enterprise journey orchestration tools) are represented.
  • Serve as a crucial link between Engineering and the Activation team, documenting and operationalizing best practices for campaign setup, QA, launch, monitoring, and optimization.

Post-Transition Focus:
  • Own end-to-end mobile/push campaign execution within enterprise journey orchestration tools, from brief intake and configuration through QA, launch, and monitoring.
  • Maintain campaign templates, journeys, and audiences within these tools, aligning with platform guardrails and channel strategy
  • Collaborate closely with Analytics, Product, and Marketing to analyze performance, recommend optimizations, and roll out experiments.

Required Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Marketing Technology, Data/Analytics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3-7+ years of experience in one or more of the following:
    • Software/platform engineering with a focus on backend or notification systems.
    • Marketing technology / campaign operations roles (e.g., mobile, push, or CRM operations) working closely with engineering teams
    • Technical campaign operations background with strong experience in enterprise decision management systems and a working understanding of API-based integrations.
  • Hands-on experience with distributed systems and event-driven architectures (e.g., event streaming platforms or similar).
  • Experience integrating with or working on notification/messaging platforms (email, SMS, push, in-app) or similar large-scale communication systems.
  • Experience in high-volume B2C communications, marketing technology, or customer engagement platforms is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in one or more modern backend languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin, C#, Go, Python, or Node.js) and associated frameworks, or strong technical fluency working with engineering teams in these stacks.
  • Critical to have experience with enterprise decision management systems and a working understanding of REST API-based integration.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and containerization/orchestration technologies.
  • Solid understanding of datastores (relational and/or NoSQL) and caching strategies for high-scale workloads.
  • Proficiency with customer data platforms and enterprise journey orchestration/activation tools, or similar enterprise solutions.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools (metrics, logs, tracing, dashboards, alerting).
  • Understanding of security best practices (authentication/authorization, secrets management, least privilege).

Nice-to-Have Qualifications
  • Experience with one or more notification/engagement solutions (e.g., customer engagement platforms or equivalent).
  • Strong experience working with enterprise decision management systems.
  • Experience implementing preference centers, consent management, frequency caps, and suppression logic.
  • Background in environments with cross-functional stakeholders (product, marketing, legal, security, data, engineering).

Competencies & Soft Skills
  • High level of analytical ability to solve complex, ambiguous problems in distributed systems and activation workflows.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical partners and activation concepts to technical teams.
  • Demonstrated ownership mindset, bias for action, and commitment to quality and reliability across both platform and campaign execution.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver in a fast-paced, iterative environment.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented working style with a focus on continuous improvement, documentation, and knowledge sharing across Engineering and Activation teams.
