What is a camp counselor?

Camp counselors are individuals who supervise, guide, and lead campers in various activities at summer camps, day camps, or other recreational programs. Their primary responsibilities include ensuring the safety of campers, organizing activities, and fostering a fun, inclusive environment. Camp counselors may also serve as role models, mentors, and problem-solvers, helping campers develop social skills and confidence. They often work in teams and are trained in first aid, emergency procedures, and conflict resolution.

What are some common challenges faced by camp counselors, and how can they be addressed?

Camp counselors often face challenges such as managing large groups of children with diverse needs, addressing homesickness, and handling unexpected situations like minor injuries or disagreements. Effective communication, adaptability, and strong organizational skills are key to overcoming these challenges. Building rapport with campers, staying calm under pressure, and collaborating closely with other staff members help ensure a positive and safe camp environment. Regular team meetings and training sessions also support counselors in navigating these common issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a camp counselor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Camp Counselor, you need experience working with children, basic first aid knowledge, and often a high school diploma or relevant certification. Familiarity with safety protocols, activity planning tools, and sometimes lifeguard or CPR certification are typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and conflict resolution skills help counselors foster a positive and inclusive camp environment. These skills ensure camper safety, smooth operation of activities, and memorable experiences for all participants.

Job description

Camp Royall Directorย ย

Make an impact. Lead with purpose. Build a camp experience that changes lives.ย ย

The Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) isย seekingย an organized, and mission-driven leader to serve asย Camp Royall Director.ย ย Camp Royall is the nation's largest and oldest camp for people with autism. Nestled on 133 wooded acres near Pittsboro, Camp Royall offers year-round programming โ€” from summer overnight and day camps to teen retreats, adult weekends, and family fun days โ€” where campers ages 4 to adulthood build skills, gain confidence, and make lifelong friends in a loving, accepting environment.ย ย

Reporting to the Recreation and Camp Services Director, the Camp Royall Directorย provides oversight forย every aspect of camp life โ€” programming and camper experience, staff hiring and training, a $1.5M annual operating budget, property and facilities, and community and donor relationships. In this role,ย you'llย be the driving force behind an inclusive, joyful, and safe environment where campers with autism can thrive, and where staff and families feel supported every step of the way.ย ย

This is a rare opportunity to lead a nationally recognized, iconic, mission-driven camp that improves lives throughout the year โ€” for campers, families, and the college students and young professionals who become camp counselors. Ifย you'reย an organized, empathetic leader who understands the unique needs of individuals with autism and knows how to inspire a team, we want to hear from you.ย ย

About Camp Royallย ย

Camp Royall is accredited by the American Camping Association, and counselor-to-camper ratios of 1:1 or 1:2 ensure every camper is understood, supported, and celebrated.ย ย

This role blends office-based work with plenty of time outdoors, in the gym, and in other recreational settings โ€” where it can be loud, warm, and sometimes a little smelly. ASNC provides the tools needed for a comfortable officeworkspace andwill helpidentifywhat'sneeded to succeed incamp'soutdoor and recreational environment. The culturevalues innovation, inclusivity, and a positive attitude, with team-building and social events throughout the year.ย ย ย

Lead and Develop Your Teamย ย
Supervise a team of full and part-time staff. Design and deliver comprehensive staff training covering behavior management, safety protocols, and daily operations โ€” setting your team up to succeed and campers up to flourish.ย ย

Partner on annual budget planning, oversee fiscal management year-round, and keep programs aligned with revenue goals. Collaborate with the Development team to nurture relationships with current and prospective donors.ย ย

Work cross-functionally with departments throughout the organization to keep camp operations running smoothly andย in syncย with broader organizational goals.ย ย

Oversee Property and Facilitiesย ย
Partner with property staff on ongoing maintenance, facility improvements, and event setup โ€” helping shape a camp environmentย that'sย safe, welcoming, and built to last.ย ย

Manage Administrative Operationsย ย
Collaborate with HR on employee matters and oversee camp program registration, ensuring smooth operations behind the scenes.ย ย

What You Bringย ย
